Hi all.

Decided to join the forum to get some tips from the Pros Smile
I never really catch anything but I still enjoy going out fishing. haha. I know super fail. Picking up a Fishing Kayak in the next two weeks so going to give that a try soon. Going to take her to Black Pond for her maiden voyage. If I wanted to catch Bass....what kinda of bait should I be using? I use night crawlers cuz im not sure what else to use haha.
Very Happy

With nightcrawlers at Black Pond, you'd probably pick up more trout than bass. The bass are in there, but the trout are much easier to find.

if your looking for bass, especially at black pond. Ditch the worms and pick up some artificial baits... black pond was right at 50 degrees yesterday. Good trout fishing, but with worms your going to catch trout and bullheads. Bass should start moving a little more as the water temps come up.

Welcome!

Bass will be along the right side all the way through the cove area. The pads will fill in fast, so save some money for frogs. Until then, try jerkbaits, spinnerbaits & cranks with rattles in them. Trout are on the left...deep water next to the mountain. Cats are in/around the channel up the middle.

Good to hear the temp finally hit 50...still slow action though. I'm definitely going to be using live bait on a secondary rig until the bite is on.

Sure, I can do that. Get yourself some 50 lb. braid and some 4/0 EWG hooks.

I bet the frog will be working like a charm 3 weeks from now...the pads fill in fast there. I'll be ditching my crankbaits in favor of plastics. Garlic frogs, worms, creature baits & flukes. I pour my own and will have plenty of freebies to share. You should get a few buzzbaits for the post-sunset action, black will do the job. And some bullet weights too. That's all you need for Black Pond.

The bass have no pads yet so they'll be tricky to locate for a while. It's a lot easier at places where there's more than one fallen tree (the pickerel have claimed that tree.) My best guess is that they're hiding in grassy areas opposite the launch, in the cove & in/around the channel going to the cove.

meriden has a lot of hidden gems. black pond is typical of a lot of ct lakes that have deep water and rocks, the bass move out and suspend in school and will move up to feed a couple times a day. with temps in the 50's the fish should be feeding pretty well but will be working off of break lines and shadowing the trout and perch. black pond has plenty of feed for the fish, just lots of pressure, not particularly for the bass, but lots of activity on the water. jerk baits will produce well, and if we ever get some sun to raise the water temp the fish will start into pre-spawn in about a month. as with any fishing cover some water especially if you have a yak and dont be afraid to experiment with different baits until you get bit. this time of year can be tricky with temps up and down. swimming a jig will cover a lot of water quickly and help you locate fish, and you wont need to change baits if you get bit and need to slow down.
