im trying to find out if fishing for shark in the surf in the new england area is possible or productive at all. Has anybody done this do this or had anyluck ?

where in NE are you looking to do this? Martha Vinyard has had about 6 great white sightings close to shore but those are illegal to catch Laughing

I don't think surf fishing for sharks in NE will be very productive for you. However you can catch sharks in NE. I have taken a few cod/haddock fishing charters out this year and we do catch dogfish. They tend to be in about the 3 to 4ft range but they are also in about 200 to 300ft of water.

actually i have heard some really good things about shark fishing in NE. I go to the cape every year and there are weekly stories of people catching dogfish (if you even consider those sharks ha) being caught from the beaches. While I was there in July a guy at the baitshop said he was frusterated with the action. he was targeting stripers from east sandwich beach and instead caught 15-20 dogfish in one night. The guys at the baitshop said it is all too common to catch dogfish in waist deep water. Also while i was there a guy caught like a 2 ft one from the marina. i visited several bait shops and asked about the sharks because i was interested too. most people laugh in your face and say why would you wanna catch one of those, they are a pest and most people catch them on accident. one bait shop was even surprised that i hadnt caught one. he said use any cut bait and go at night. if you catch any post a picture please

FYI:
If you can tell the difference -> "Smooth Dog Fish" is what is used to make the famous British Fish & Chips in England.
Have to soak it first in salted water to get the urea out of the fillets.

Panfish - I can tell you that they are thought of as a nuisance fish. They are often times caught by fishermen when targeting other fish such as cod, haddock, pollock and stripers...and yes it is usually when fishing with cutbait. They are still fun to catch. i caught a nice sized one when I went out in April this year and it gave the best fight of any of the other fish I caught. The other problem though is that the dogfish can hurt the populations of the target fish and that's why people dislike them. I'm heading out on another trip in September and I'll try and get a picture of one. The last time I went out which was in June we didn't catch any dogfish. People on the boat did but no one in our group. Thanks for the info on the surf fishing. I wasn't aware they were that close to shore.

oh i know, i have heard they can be harmful but i wouldnt mind catching one anywyay. i have never caught one but when i was at the cape i would have been fine if i accidentally hooked one while fishing for stripers

where there is a will there is a way!!! guys in Jersey catch huge sharks from shore on a regular basis! I myself have only caught dog fish but not while targeting deep species it was actually after fluke off missiquamicut (sp?) beach in 30 40 feet of water and a few hundred yards down the beach at watch hill point i saw a 7ft bull shark only 150 yards off the light house point...And if u think about it with seals around fishers and even into norwich harbor and all the false albacore and bonito around im sure there has to be sharks not to far behind..

this is just one of the reasons i HATE spiney Dogfish. Two at once while tuna fishing with a 10" Yo- Zury. And you can even see one trying to eat the ones on the hook. Their about 30 or 40 more that came up with them just out of sight of the camera. Twisted Evil

sometimes you can't even get a bait it the water when their all over it. from the surface all the way down to 100 fathoms. Evil or Very Mad

Ive caught dogfish from the beach at rocky neck at night, actually the biggest fish i ever caught was a 4 footer there.

Last year i got sand sharks. 3' to over 4' range... maybe not the sharks you after but most def fun and i was tryin to target the striper... in the sand flats dock and dine area.....

Hey SeaDog, ive heard of bleeding em too, though never got the mustard to try a dogfish, I just let em go,
