I pedaled my Hobie around Spring Pond for a couple of hours, from 10:20 am to 12:30 pm. The water temperature was between 40 and 42 degrees, the air temperature was between 36 and 37 degrees, the sky was overcast, and it was snowing, but there was very little wind:

I didn't see any fish and, once again, my finder didn't mark any. I had planned to throw a bunch of different lures, but ended up throwing only a lipless crankbait and a wacky Senko. I also trolled the crankbait around almost the entire perimeter of the pond. My guess is that the fish are sitting on the bottom underneath the weeds. I might drop a heavily weighted Texas-rigged crawfish down there to find out.

Unfortunately, I wore shoes with a single layer of socks and had to get off the water when my feet got numb. But, hey, now I know to wear a double layer of socks and my warmest boots during the tourney on Pickerel Lake on Saturday.

Phil,

Do yourself a favor and pick up a pack of these:

I prefer white/red but I'd bet a chartreuse or even black would work nice.

My Uncle Steve was the best fisherman I ever met, and he used to call them "those cheaty lures" meaning that on the worst day, you'd get at least something (that something might be a perch though).

My big issue with them is they snag often and that's tough from shore. It shouldn't be a problem for you.

DVP - As a Chicagoan, I really appreciate that. Laughing

J.P. - I took a look at that when you mentioned it in an earlier post. Thanks.

Peco, use an x rap which is made by rapala. Size 10 is best in the silver body with black back. Best spring time lure around! Also you can throw a jig, but ive found they cant resist the xrap when the water is this cold.

Yeah, try any kind of suspending jerk bait, try to get one that will suspend just above the weeds and give it a few light jerks then let it sit for 5-10 seconds, they'll usually hit it on the pause this time of the year. Make sure it is a suspending jerkbait not a floating one, the suspending ones work a lot better this time of the year.

Thanks, guys. Flippy told me the same thing. I'll give it a try.

fishingmaniac12 and basswacka19

I don't know whether you guys read the report on the Hell's Anglers tournament on Saturday, but you guys were right on the money. At least four of the five fish we got were caught on jerk baits. I don't know how DickVanPike was fishing his, but NickP said that the two he caught hit his jerk bait when he wasn't even paying attention to it.

From talking with Mike L and Nickp, I've learned that the best way to catch a fish is to talk with Flippy while you're fishing. That's probably how DickVanPike got his; he was Flippy's non-boater.
