I'm new to ice, so I'll admit I have no idea what I'm doing. I already have no confidence in maggots on #10 hooks & 4# test. Those laughably small fish we caught were lighter than the lures I throw in summer (they were adorable though.) Quantity doesn't matter as much as quality to me. What's the proper setup if you plan to catch fish with teeth, or fish in excess of 6 lbs? Any way to do it without using live bait or tip-ups? _________________ Kira

oh absolutely, first of all lose your fear of the ice, 2nd drill about forty holes in the ice, take forty sticks of dynamite drop them in the holes, calmly walk back to shore, take a shot of tequila and pull the fuse, take another shot of quila an go get your fish , works every time lol |

That's it - I'm putting braid on my jigging rod. Screw this 4lb trouty line. _________________ Kira

That's too freaking funny. This hat is extremely popular with the general public if frequent compliments are any indication. Scads of people ask me where I got it. It's made of warm, soft super-comfortable fleece and has the earflaps I require in the winter. I'm told it's "cute." It really is the greatest hat. _________________ Kira

Kira if you put braid on your jigging rod make sure its for cold weather. Regular braid will freeze up. |

I found a couple of photos on my Nikon SLR. Unfortunately, I didn't have many good reasons to pull it out that day. Here's Jon exploring a laydown close to the intersection of the dead end branch with the main channel of the river:
Being on river ice instead of pond ice creeped me out a little, but the ice was so thick that I didn't really worry about it, despite the noises it made and the cracks that appeared in it:

Guess what Phil? I don't scream like a girl when the ice is covered in snow, not making cracking noises, and I can't see the 2 inches I'm standing on. I prefer it over that 9 inch thick, more reliable ice. _________________ Kira

Yeah, Jon and I talked about how opaque white ice is psychologically more comforting than transparent black ice when you're walking on it, even though black ice is safer. It reminds me of that experiment where they put a crawling baby on glass that goes over a visible drop. Even though the baby can feel the glass surface, it will not crawl over the drop. Its sense of vision trumps its sense of touch. Being able to see through the ice is inherently a little creepy. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hi All!
A good stretch of cold Wx and black ice "over" 4 inches is very reliable.
Though I do have the advantage of confidence because as a 100% Polack -> S_ _ t....... FLOATS
And I do "ALWAYS" have my Safety Gear on me

I'm with Kira on the whole micro ice fishing. I kind of have the same question, though. How am I going to rig a 8" live baitfish without setting off false flags? _________________ Go big or go home! |

big baits big fish? dude call me crazy but ive caught 5lb bass on half the size of those baits. Eveen a 38.5in pike on smaller bait. thru the ice! some of the heritage tip-ups and some others have a drag system on the reels that you can tighten down if you must. sometimes by fooling with the flag on others you can put more tension on the spool. I am also a strong believer of quality over quantity and always practice catch and release 99% of the time. i think you would be better served with smaller bait just my opionion. |
