Hey guys, i am interested in learning how catch smelt through the ice? Where do i start? What do i use? What depths can i find them in? Any tips or advice would be awesome

Personal Best freswater fish.
1. 40.5" PIke caught and released out of Bantam ice fishing with a shiner.
2. 30" Rainbow Trout caught and released out of Scoville on a mepps. (random lake) |

Hi Mike1!
Well 1st of all there are only 2 bodies of water in Ct. that have Smelt.
Colebrook Res. -> North end -> Have to park on Rt. 8 north -> Then go down a path they call the Goat Path, long, very steep, and a super pain to climb back up 
Hogback Res. is the other -> not to bad to walk down to or back.
BEWARE  At Hogback they do release water and it has happened that you can have an AIR GAP (as much as 2 ft.) between the ice and water.
SPUD your way out by checking that there is water under the ice to hold it up -> STARTING at the shore line and then every few feet out from there.
Me -> I prefer to go up to Massachusetts just across the border -> Onota Lake or Littleville Res. -> parking, short walk out over deep water, + you can also catch nice trout and salmon.

Onota Lake really? I fished it this weekend, tons of small yellow perch!

Hi mf!
YES Onota is LOADED with Smelt
The Smelt there are the forage base for all the game fish.
They run 5 to 7 inches usually around 40-60 ft. down.
Deep water just off the parking lot/fishing pier.
Short walk -> And you can catch a bucket full 
Super eating

Oh! After you catch some, you can use them as bait for trout and salmon (Also at Onota) from just under the ice to 20 ft down. |
