went to collinsville yesterday and picked up a demo'd red native watercraft ultimate 14.5. i havent taken it out yet, but the kayak is perfect for someone my size. also being able to stand up in it with its tunnel hull is huge for me. anyone out there have one? i picked it up as a demo for $750.

Hi jon!

Great looking boat!
Was it the 14.5 Solo or tandem.
Lots of room for you and gear.
Should be nice and stable with that tunnel hull and 30" beam.

Don't forget to christen HER properly before you make your 1st voyage! Very Happy
To do that you have to give HER a name!
Do you have one in mind Question

Hmmmmm!? -> If not the gang here on CTFT can help! Very Happy
Seems we're getting good at this naming thing Exclamation Razz Razz

Since it's RED -> "Dangerous Lady" - "Lady in Red" (LIR for short) or "I don't give a Dam Scarlett" might work! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Ooooooh! Just thought of 2 more -> "RED RIDER" after the cartoon character! Laughing Laughing or -> "Fire Fox" -> That sounds nice! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Best regards,

Guess what I would have suggested if Jon had gotten a yellow boat!

(Old Yeller, for you youngsters who don't know that Big Red is a dog in an old Disney movie)

Thanks for clarifying that Phil. I thought Big Red was made by Wrigley's.

Hi jon!

This is just a repeat of the PM I sent you.

Kept thinking of what you could name your new boat.
Came up with this, as you are a musician.

"Red Rhapsody" or just "Rhapsody".

Either has a nice ring to it Exclamation Very Happy

If you're still shopping for a boat, in addition to the usual suspects (e.g., Dick's, EMS, Collinsville Canoe and Kayak), you should definitely go to Connecticut Outdoors at 20 Main Street in Oakville, which is just outside of Waterbury off of Route 8, and talk with Dave Farber, who is the owner of the shop. Dave has a big inventory of boats, including some demo boats, and all at decent prices. In particular, he has several boats that are already well set up for fishing. I went to the shop for the first time earlier this week with SeaDog1 (aka Stephen). I drooled over several boats and am now convinced that I need at least one more. Surprisingly, when I met Dave at the shop, he told me that we had met once before. When I went fishing with Daryl (aka Daryl) on 10/20 at Bantam River, I met Dave on the water while a reporter from the Litchfield Times was interviewing him. Anyway, you should head over there, but don't take any of the boats that I want! Wink

Phil

I've looked at their website, and considered taking a ride out there, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I bought my kayak from there in late summer. Dave was phenomenal. Showed us (my wife and I went, although we were only purchasing one kayak) the available kayaks, talked us through it and then left us in the room so we could try getting in and out of the various kayaks (definitely worth it as it change my mind on the kayak I was looking at - initial one looked good but was difficult getting in it). Then, once we decided to buy, I purchase a Thule cartop rack , and Dave installed it, showed us how to do it on our own and then walked us through loading and unloading the kayak on (giving us tips and pointers along the way). As this was my first, I found this extremely helpful. We were there for several hours, and it felt like we got personal lessons from Dave. No pressure to buy , and no pressure to move it along...a really good experience. They are really passionate about kayaking, and if you have the interest, they definitely give you the time.

Hey, Jon, I'm curious. How are you transporting your boat? It's pretty big.

It's big but I'm able to strap it on top of my accord using foam blocks. I'm just strong and tall enough to get it on top of my car unassisted but it's not too tough. Plus my car is old so i don't really care about scratching the roof at all. I actually took it out for the first time today to nod brook for 2 hours. Didn't catch anything but it was such a nice day. It was just nice to get out on the water and test the boat out a little. Definitely extremely happy about the purchase.
