Hey, my name is Jon, and I am a jazz trombone/education major at Uconn but I will be living back home in Simsbury when I graduate this year. I have been fishing seriously for about a year but just joined this forum this week. I have been reading a lot of posts and decided I really need a kayak. I have a budget ($500), and I am very tall- I'm 6'7", so I need something that I know i can be comfortable in. Before I go out and try some out for myself, does anyone have any suggestions from an angler's perspective?
Thanks,
Jon |

Welcome, Jon I would look around on Craigs list. A buddy just bought a 17' Kayak from there the only thing is he's not 6'7'. He got a good end of season price. approx $600. I know one thing try all styles sit-on one with a cockpit, and if all else fails. Try a canoe there are so many styles prices etc. Unfortunatly i don't know many folkes as tall as you. Hope it helps.

Boy, Jon, that's a tall order! Seriously, though, you'd probably be looking for a sot (i.e., sit on top) kayak, instead of a sink (i.e., sit in kayak). Like Tim said, you'd have to try them out in person first, but there are tons from which to choose. Since it's the end of the season and you live in Simsbury, you should stop by Collinsville Canoe and Kayak in Collinsville and Eastern Mountain Sports (i.e., EMS) in Avon, in addition to Dick's Sporting Goods in Canton. EMS recently had a weekend sale where all of its kayaks were 20 percent off and it has some really nice fishing kayaks, including some nicely priced demo boats. I'm looking forward to its next sale. Black Friday, perhaps?
I'm not a huge fan of Pelican kayaks, even though I own one with which I'm perfectly satisfied, Someone else on this site has referred to it as my "floating blue torture device". However, Costco has a 13 foot Pelican Castaway 130 fishing sot on sale for $599, and with its 100 percent satisfaction forever guarantee, it might be worth trying because you could always return it.
BTW, my 16 year old son is also a boner, ahem, trombonist, I mean.

Yea, that was kind of my plan to check out those places. Especially because I am a member of the Uconn outing club and we get 20% off all full-priced items at the Manchester EMS. So waiting for a sale wouldn't matter for me.
Phil, what district is your son in? Let me know if he ever needs a private teacher. I'll be student teaching at Canton high school next semester.

Hi Jon!
Welcome aboard!
As for a kayak -> Phil and DD can help you!
As a marine surveyor my suggestion/advice is to do some research on Google. (Try typing in the Google search box (fishing kayak pictures).
Click on the 1st line showing pictures then you can go thru all the pictures shown and click on those that interest you.
1. A flat bottom kayak will draw the least amount of water to get into shallow areas! (That's why riverboats have flat bottoms).
2. A wide enough beam for stability!
3. Space enough to carry gear and tackle!
4. Do you want a hard body or inflatable kayak?
5. Weight! -> You want a kayak that you can put in and out by yourself!
6. Try Googling up "fishing kayak reviews" -> Lots of good info to look over!
Have FUN!
Best regards,
