Daryl and I fished a small private pond today. I can't say which pond, because there's no public access to it. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure that it has a name. But I can't say where it is, either. Daryl did a lot of legwork last week to get permission for us to check it out. Sorry about the "Pond X" thing.

I just wanted to report that the only lure that worked for us today was a wacky rigged Senko, fished very slowly on the bottom. I used both five inch and four inch green pumpkin/red flake Senkos. Daryl used four inch blue pearl/black hologram Senkos. The fish would pick up the Senkos off of the bottom. We caught 20 largemouth bass, but they were all small, ranging from 9 inches to 14 inches. They were all healthy looking, but they were all skinny. I never pulled out my scale, but am certain that even the 14 inchers weighed under one pound. Here are some photos:

Oh, and although all of the bass looked healthy, a couple had old bite marks on them from larger fish and one of them had these weird red things in its mouth that looked like worms, but might have been blood vessels:

Does anyone know what those red things are? In any case, even though we didn't catch any lunkers, it was a blast catching lots of healthy fish. It's been a while since I caught more than 10 fish in an outing.

Nice job guys! Looks like you had fun. That does look like some sort of worm on that bass.

Way to get out there, guys. You could just call it a private pond and avoid the whole lake x altogether. Catching 20 bass is fun no matter what size they are.

The fish really started to bite around noon and I started to wonder whether the bite would coincide with a peak fishing time on the solunar calendar. I just checked and, if anything, noon on Sunday was one of the worst times for fishing, according to the calendar.

Does anyone here put much stock in the solunar calendar?

I used to then realized with my crazy schedule, and my daughters soccer games and practice, I can't revolve my life around those times. I don't see that it makes that much of a difference to be honest. I have done well at off peak times just as well as on.

Well I must agree, it was a awesome day! Jed is right, 20 bass between 2 fishing buddies is a good time, no matter what size.

That seems to be the problem with a lot of lakes and ponds in this state. All the gamefish are stockpiled/stunted due to everyone keeping all the big ones and medium ones all the time.

Nonetheless, the thrill of finding a spot, getting permission to fish and actually doing it is a great thing! I have been able to speak with a few guys that fish from work, etc. All have agreed with Phil's statement about bass sucking up the worms off the bottom this Fall. It really seemed like that's all they wanted to do this Sunday!

Below is a few pics of some of the bass. They were all the same size roughly.

Derek and Tim, all 4 of us kayakers from this Farmington area need to do a fall Farmington paddle-fest before the weather gets the best of us! Of course anyone else would be welcome too! Any ideas guys? Laughing

Well, Nod Brook would be hard to beat for location. There are definitely some largemouth bass in there that are bigger than the three pound, seven ouncer that I caught a few weeks ago. I think that dragging bait slowly along the bottom would be a good strategy. Drop shot, Carolina rig, Texas rig, jigging; any of these might work.

Phil and Derek.... Either one of you guys think you might want to hit Nod Brook on Sunday? Maybe the Farmington? I'm just thinking it really might start to get cold very soon. I'm free Sunday morning. Let me know guys, either via this thread or PM

Anyone else is welcome too. It's just not a very big place, not motors, so no whining! Laughing
