I decided to head out to Mashapaug today. I had been thinking about going there for a while now and was debating because I have heard that the bite is slow up there this time of year. I knew it would be a tough day but I decided to go anyway. I got out on the water at about 7:15am and got off about 1:00pm. The water temps were between 50 & 51 deg. The sky was cloudy the whole day.
Right at the launch I saw a few fish jumping but was unable to land anything. I had what looked like a small walleye hit my crankbait but it didn't grab the hooks. I threw a crankbait, spinnerbait, jig w/ craw trailer, tube and a senko and didn't get but a few nibbles here and there. Here's a pic of the most excitement I had all day...
...I thought I heard a boat coming around the corner and when I looked over I saw the Direct TV blimp coming over head.
I did see several hundred LMBs but they were all 2" or under and hiding in all the rocks along the shoreline. The one LMB of any size that I did see was about a 2lber and it followed my crankbait but didn't bite. I threw a senko right in front of it but again it didn't bite. The fish are definitely slowing down. When I was heading back to the ramp I saw a salmon that was pretty good size and that was all that I saw for fish. I will say it's a beautiful lake (especially this time of year with the leaves changing) but there was not much to catch today. The good signs I saw with all the LMB fry tell me that this Lake must hold a lot of fish...the water was just too cold today though.

Thanks! Yeah...at least it wasn't raining and I did get plenty of exercise. Up until this morning when I got to the end of my road I wasn't sure if I was going to go to Mash or Winchester. I was thinking Winchester at first because at least I would have the chance of catching a Pike but ultimately I decided to check out a new place. According to the Angler's guide Mash is only about 40acres larger than Winchester but after paddling around Mash today it seems much bigger than Winchester. I'm not quite sure why. |

I wish that I could have joined you. I need to get some pedaling in, soon. I might troll for walleye at Batterson tomorrow. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Derek, I think the blimp was filming action shots of you paddling for ESPN
Since I got my CT boating permit I decided to go out to Winchester lake yesterday with my father and my friend Dan. There was a little action there yesterday. I will post a report later today hopefully.
Hoping Tuesday's weather looks good! Damn this cold New England weather! _________________ Daryl

Can't get them all the time Derek, Sorry I missed the trip, fishing solo is ok, it's better fishing with you and Phil next time.

I figured I would have to get skunked again at some point. This was the first time I saw the skunk since I've been fishing from the yak...so I can't complain. My trip would have been better with some company as well. |
