Me and my brother are going to aspinook pond tomorrow for the first time and i was wondering if anybody has fished there before? If so, ever have much luck? a buddy of mine said hat theres some good large mouth fishing there but i'm hoping to come on a decent smallie, i'm assuming there are some smallies in there seems how its fed by the quinebaug river. I will post how we do at some point over the weekend.

So, me and my brother hit aspinook up yesterday 10/2. We launched my 17ft skeeter at buts bridge which surprisingly had a nice deep boat launch. Got on the water at 1:00pm and was off by 5:00pm. I thought it was a damn but its really just a wide, deep, slower moving part of the quinebaug river with an average depth of 8ft and as deep as 15ft in a few spots. It was a little windy with 10-20mph gusts but the part of the river we fished had a lot of trees surrounding it so it wasn't really that bad on the water. Like i said in my last post, My buddy that has a few tournaments there through out the summer months told me no body ever catches any smallmouths but the largemouth fishing is good there. I guess he's never been there in the fall because me and my brother put 20 smallies in the boat and had about 5 shake offs. most of the smallies we caught where 8-10 in but i did manage a 2.5lb and a 2lb smallie and my brother got two that made the 1.5 mark.
So we where actually really happy with the results and i will be hitting that place up again this week hopefully. We caught all are fish on drop shot with 5in zoom finesse worm. started catching them on watermelon red fleck when the sun was out but then it got really cloudy by 4:00 and we switched to black with red fleck and started catching them again.

I'm glad that someone was catching some fish yesterday. You gotta love those smallies!

What kind of fishing line were you using for your drop shot?

yeah, i love catching smallies! I use 10lb p-line fluorocarbon. It's cheap, only $20 for 1000 yards.

It seems like years since I've caught a smallmouth, but from what I can remember, I'll bet those fish right there fought just as hard--or harder--than half the largemouths in this state.

Looks like you had a blast!

By the way - how do you like that Skeeter? I'm leaning towards a deep V (makes a lot more sense for me), but if I "had" to get a bass boat, I've only heard great things about that company.

Smallies definitely put up a good fight, especially river smallies seems how they like to stay in the current. I really like my skeeter, the one i have is a real light low profile hull which is nice for small lakes and ponds but it doesn't handle waves very well, thats the only part that was a little disappointing.
