Hello all! I'm Daryl. I finally pulled the trigger and joined the site after many months of reading posts. Anyhow, I'm a South Carolina transplant that ended up here about 10 years ago.
I took some time off fishing for the last few years and boy am I glad to be back. Started back up this June and go about 3 times a week. I'm a freshwater guy, but don't mind saltwater either. Bass is my passion and trout is a close second.
I fish a lot of areas around Simsbury, Avon, Bloomfield, Canton and of course Farmington, Riverton and Winsted too. I have a canoe, inflatable kayak and some other various boats that I borrow from friends and family from time to time.
Special thanks to PeCo, Kira and all the others that frequently converse with them on this board for giving me some great tips and lake suggestions. I'm surprised that I haven't bumped into anyone on my trips to West Hill or Silver lake or even the Nod Brook WMA.
Looking forward to actively posting up some reports now that I finally took the effort to join the site. Plus I'm always down for fishing buddies. Good to see everyone here seems pretty committed to environmental preservation, trash pickup and following the laws where limits and C&R are concerned.
Can't wait to fish! Oh well only 12 more hours until sunrise on Sunday morning.... |

My first fish this year was a 20 inch chain pickerel from Nod Brook WMA. I also caught a lot of 15 inch largemouth bass there early in the Spring. I've been planning to head back there soon. Have the weeds died back yet?

Welcome to the site! Glad you decided to join up and post. The more the merrier. I am in West Hartford and fish the CT River, Rainbow (when it isn't being drained over and over), West Hill, Highland, Bantam, and wherever else. I've got a boat (and stick Phil on the back of it whenever I can) but now that I'm starting to see all of these paddling parties going out all the time I may have to pull out the inflatable kayak and go that route one of these days - though it's hard to go back to fighting the wind and only having a couple of setups with me. Anyway, hope to see you out there.
By the way, I was just on Lake Wylie this past week shooting some bass fishing stuff with Jason Quinn. The fishing absolutely sucked on Wylie for the first time since I've been going there....but that's a different story. I used to live in Charlotte and transplanted up here in late 2002.

Hey, thanks for the warm welcome. I hope to get together with some of you and go fishing. I'm going to make an attempt at my first report in the lake fishing section later today. Had a great Sunday at Silver lake, caugt some of everything too.
Peco, I'm wondering if Nod Brook WMA is going to be a good spot for ice fishing. I'm suspecting it could be very productive and also i'm sure to be amazed at whatever comes out of there. I've had 1 or 2 largemouths on there that popped 8lbs test before being boated. Also a friend of mine gets trout and salmon after floods there in the early Spring. By the way, the weeds seem to be receding some in the upper pond. If the weather is cooperative I might paddle there early on Tuesday since I'm not working.
Old Mud, I've never even seen the Bob Newhart show, but I should probably carry around one of those click-type people counters to take a lifelong tally of how many times I've heard the joke. Lol
DirtyDawg, I'm very interested in expanding my fishing efforts into the Granby area. I've never even headed that direction with a fishing pole before. Any smaller areas or brooks to fish out that way that are productive this time of year?
Phish, glad to see another Southern boy on this site. I'm sure there are the days when you miss Lake Norman too. Or what about Santee Cooper? My personal best catfish out of there was 62 lbs back in 1993 when I was 9 years old. I couldn't even hold the fish up to take pictures, but somewhere grandpa has one of me next to it with him holding it up above my head, it was longer than I was tall. I'm jealous you were over at Wylie! Let me know if you ever need a counter-weight in your boat. I'm kinda light but I'm sure I could fill my vest with sinkers!
Cots, how is fisher meadows. I shore fished there once for about a half-hour but had no idea what to throw into there. I'm assumin there's bass? |

With all of the weeds in Nod Brook, I'd definitely go with braid and a fluorocarbon leader. Plus, the chain pickerel would bite right through nylon mono.
I've never been able to find a bathymetric map of the ponds at Nod Brook. I know where the channels are in both ponds, but I'm sure there are some deep holes about which I don't know. If I were to get off my lazy butt and finally mount my fish finder, we could find out where to poke holes in the ice. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Hey Daryl,
I actually don't fish much in Granby. I have heard people catching fish in sections of Salmon Brook but I have never fished it. Manitook is supposed to be pretty good but it's a private lake. Eventually I will figure out a way to get my inflatable out there and fish it. Also there is Enders Pond which I have never fished and Christiansen's Pond which I have fished for sunnies with my kids. Christiansen's is stocked with trout on opening day for the kids but from what I've found they don't last much past opening day and the fishing pressure is crazy there for such a small pond. |
