Hi Phil!
I agree with you -> Pike are well known as Scavangers and will take dead bait as well as live.
That's why I saved, and froze, those 2 big Goldies I caught a Burr for ice fishing!
And YEAH!, I'd very much like to see the pictures of that 41" Pike 
Looks like wet WX for the next 3 days!

SeaDog1 - It might be wet outside, but if the wind dies, I'll be out on the water. I want to take a couple of keeper walleye home from Batterson.
BTW - I just checked TurtleKiss (aka Kira)'s facebook page. It would be nice if she were to post a fishing report here from time to time!  She opted out of the Pike Challenge yesterday and went to Hopeville Pond instead. She caught a 4 lb 12 oz largemouth bass and a 26 inch northern pike. I have to say that we each made the right choice for ourself, yesterday. Congratulations on the pike, Kira! First Dawg, then me, then you, plus Flipper's new personal best; it was a great weekend for pike.

Yes congrats Kira on the nice Pike and Bass you caught yesterday. We needed you badly to help us out in the pike challenge though 
I'd also like to add that my original concerns about pleasure boaters on Bantam Sunday was unfounded. There were really no issues. The lake seemed plenty big enough for everyone to play nicely on. It may be a different story during the height of summer but for an early fall weekend my little inflatable held up fine out there. |

Phil,
I dont know that you've ever met BT, but I have and he is not really the type of person to "persecute" anybody for anything. He is a hell of an angler, sportsmen and a real nice guy. Very laidback and could care less what people use for bait. I think that his remarks on dead bait being better than live bait were soley a retort to a claim somebody else made...

Yeah, Joe, I've met Pete. I just wanted him to know that I don't think there's anything wrong with using live or dead bait. He seemed a little defensive about it before. Just a little. But, yeah, "retort" is probably a better characterization. Heck, if I didn't believe in it before, after yesterday I'm completely sold!

Hi Guys!
Bottom line is -> What ever bait you have the most sucess with and catches fish is the one you'll most likely stay with -> Always nice though to know there is an alternative especially when ice fishing!

Sooooo. We started out in the south cove and I got the first bite on the western side on a large in line spinner (black and red w/ willow leaf blade). I saw the fish take it right next to the boat but it only stayed on for a few sec. It was over 30" but not much bigger. Just down the bank where the marina starts is where all hell broke loose! I was throwing a lure at the docks when (I'll use Joe's quote) it sounded like somebody jumped off a diving board and did a cannonball behind the boat. I grabbed my rod once I realized it was my bobber that was missing and the fish was on. No hookset reqired. I knew it was big, but when we got our first look at it I knew it was fatter than any I had caught before. I didn't think it was any longer than usual, though. Once my skipper used his awesome netting skills and the fish was in the boat, I had a little mini heart attack! You guys have heard the rest of the story so here it is.

We used a tapemeasure for the length and a Berkley digital for the weight and quickly let her swim away. Unfortunately the rest of the day was pretty uneventful - we fished the entire north cove, then the sunken island, then back to the south cove. Nothing was happening. I felt bad that Joe (Bass Sniper) didn't get one but I promised I'd take him to Hopeville to change his luck. Great day of fishing!!!

WOW! Nice Pike
Beautiful colors and markings!
As the comedian Gabriel Inglesia says "There are 6 catagories of fat!"
That fish qualifies in the #5 catagory as DAM!
Now you have to go for catagory #6 -> Oh! HELL NO!! 
Wish old Joe Mett had measured that 29 lb. Pike he caught in Lake Lily back in 1980. -> Think that one would qualify for catagory #6.
Again -> very nice fish! 
Looks like you almost cracked your face wide open with the smiles you have on in the pictures -> AND NO ONE CAN BLAME YOU

It is Damian, by the way. Dawg - I hear you about the adrenaline rush. My heart was pounding for about ten min. after I let her go. That's why I have migrated to pike fishing. I have caught bigger fish than that (stripers, carp, even a shark), but nothing is quite like catching a big pike. I have finally took the time to learn how to post pics so I will load up my album tonight if anybody wants to see more. Great meeting up w/ you guys yesterday, too. I don't know how you guys can paddle around for that long. We left at 2:30pm and I was WIPED!!!

You can't tell from the photo, but Damian is about 8 feet tall! That fish was huge!
Seriously, though, do northern pike always bleed from the gills when you pull them from the water?

Phil - I didn't opt out of the Pike Challenge...I just decided to try for mine elsewhere. I was concerned about the weekend boat traffic, plus Bantam twice in the same week is overkill considering I haven't done well there. Company would've been nice, but I'm glad I went to Hopeville instead. I'll post a report later.

I really don't care what you use for bait. I myself live line bait for bass although I have much better success with artifical baits thats why I only do it thru the ice. I practice for tournaments were "live bait" is illegal. Targeting other species like trout and pike thats all I will use when not fishing through the ice and it works best for me in all situations river or lake.
