|
|
Looking for somewhere different to fish...has to have a launch, allow electric motors, and not close between sunset and sunrise. I'd also like it to have pads, a well-defined weedline and no crazy stumps or boulders in random places so I can zip around in the dark without turning on my headlamp and destroying my night eyes. Oh, and it must have bass.
I'm just using my appointment in Bristol as an excuse to fish more west. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe something that isn't in the DEP guide? I'm VERY tempted to try Highland or launch in West Hill but that whole northwest corner is a really long drive home for me, and twice in one week is overkill. That's why I put 25 minutes and not 32.
Thank you. _________________ Kira

Use a red film over your headlamp lense or buy a lamp that comes with interchangeable lenses. Red light does not hurt your night eyes nor scare fish. I have two lights with me, one red and one white.
I live east of the river and have no suggestions near Bristol. I like Lower Bolton. Rarely catch something big but has lots of stupid fish (fish willing to bite my offerings). Highland is really big for electric only. With your craft I would recommend a trip to Lower Moodus. |

Hi Kira!
Well I checked all my books and maps.
Not much to chose from 25 minutes of Bristol.
Best I can tell you is to try Stillwater Pond just west of Torrington.
Follow Rt.4 till you get to Rt. 272 North. Stillwater is just a short distance up.
Has a very good boat launch ramp + parking and only electric motors allowed.
Good weed beds and water lily pads to chose from.
Best regards,

Pauleye - I have the red/white lenses. The red is way too week to navigate with. I use it for tying knots. Highland has a 6mph speed limit between sunset and sunrise...that's why I mentioned it. Just the shape of it looks bassy, but it's probably out of my boat's league. I was hoping for something smaller & closer. Bolton is one of my standard night spots already...yes I catch fish, but so few pads! I've never heard of anything huge coming out of there. Kind of defeats the purpose of my question though, since it's east of where I live and a 42 minute drive from Bristol.
davoforty - Scovil was my original plan, but I'm not supposed to operate a vessel after sunset there. Do anchoring and drifting count as "operating?" I could stay hidden if I sit in the bowfin swamp all night but there's no way I'm doing that alone.
BT - Very funny. It's got a well-defined weedline all right - the entire pond.
slimecoat - I haven't been there in a while, but my impression of it is that I shouldn't be there alone at night or in the morning. Lots of drinking going on, and I'm too shy to introduce myself.
SeaDog - Stillwater is more than 25 minutes, and I can get to Bantam just as quick. I scoured the DEP guide all day yesterday and couldn't find anything that met my criteria.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I was hoping to try somewhere new, only more west. Does everyone in western CT just go to C-wood or those lakes in the NW corner? I've scrapped my plan. I'll stay home and wash the dishes or fish somewhere closer to home instead. _________________ Kira

Hi Kira!
I live in Winsted so all most all the lakes and ponds in the NW corner are within or slightly over 30 minutes from me.
Moved up here 4 years ago. Wasn't planned, just happened that way, (Don't hate me ) but I'm in fishing central!!!!!
(West Hill, Colebrook Res., Hogback, Park, Winchester, Burr, Wood Creek, Stillwater, McDonough, Highland, Bantam, Little Bantam, Mount Tom, Mohawk, Tyler, West Side, Dog, East and West Twin.)
(Also Bantam River, Farmington River, Naugatuck River, Blackberry River, and Housatonic)
Also I have my Mass. Lic. and am only 8 miles from the border so I hit those waters in Mass. that are close such as Otis Res.
Can always help you with most of those waters up here.!
Have you ever tried any of the 3 Congamond Lakes north of you?
Ct. lic. is good in all 3.
Best regards,

Kira,
Try Tyler Lake in Goshen. Maybe a bit futher, depending on where in Bristol. Small lake, lots of weeds, wood docks, etc. I always do well there. Not a ton of traffic this time of year

Hi Kira,
Have you ever fished Ball Pond? It often gets overlooked for Candlewood.
It is a good place for small boats, alot pads and weeds and even some deep water out in the middle.
There are no motors allowed, but it is small enough to row or paddle around and it has bass. There are some lunkers in there from I hear. Good luck. |

Wow, I haven't been to any of the places mentioned...Congamond, Tyler, Winnemaug, Ball? You'd think in a state this small everything would be within "driving distance." I'm pretty much in the middle near 84, 91 & 5/15 and still everything takes a while to get to according to Google. Ball Pond is definitely out...there's no way I'm rowing my fiberglass tub unless the motor malfunctions or falls off.
New question...what's the best place that meets the aforementioned conditions within 30 minutes of 410 Capitol Avenue in Hartford (according to Google?) No, that's not my address (but it will be if I can't get away from these channel catfish lakes.) _________________ Kira

Morey Pond in Ashford, is 33 minutes according to Google maps. I don't remember seeing any type of gate at the entrance to the launch. |
