My wife and I took her young nephews (ages 14 and 11) to Spring Pond this afternoon (12 p.m. to 2 p.m.) to try our luck fishing. Neither had ever caught anything bigger than a sunfish, and so we hoped to break their PBs.

The original plan was to try and catch some pickerel, as they "look" huge. We were drifiting over the submerged weedbeds, throwing 3/8 oz Strike King bleeding bait spinner baits (white with red).

For the first hour my wife took out the 14 year old, but was skunked. In the next hour, I took out the 11 year old. Their mother came to pick them up, but let us have "just five more minutes." As we approached the first island I threw out the spinnerbait and let it sink to a four-count, started to slow roll it, then tap-BAM!

I handed the rod over to the 11 year old and he fought a very fresh, very energetic fish. It took out line like no other (a good five second straight run twice) and jumped several times. I got a look at it on its first jump and thought it might be a fat pickerel by the length of it. The first time he got it close to the boat, I realized my mistake: it was an enormus largemouth bass!

Now this kid's very inexperienced, so he needed a few tips and an occasional rod hold for him to get his hands in the right places, but this was his fight, and it lasted several minutes. All I did was the hook set and netting - he dealt with the hard job of fighting the beast! I was so proud of him - for going from sunfish to this, he did a great job!

I didn't have a scale or tape measurer, but knew this bass was well over 5lbs. I would not be suprised to find it was over 6.

If you're wondering why I'm soaked, it's because during all the excitement, no one tied up the boat! So I got to find out first hand where the drop off is! There are a few dry photos, but not on my camera (he eventually did hold the fish as well).

Since his mom was there, he wanted to show her his catch, so the fish was out of the water a bit longer than I'd like, but considering I was already soaked head to toe, I pulled a Zeb Hogan and waded out with the fish to resuscitate it. It took some time, but we were able to release it successfully.

After the kids left, my wife and I headed out for another drift, and the same method produced a smaller bass (maybe 14"?). After swimming and rowing, we decided to call it a day after that.

This was my first time taking a kid fishing, and I think I'm more excited than he was Smile

Now I just need to figure out a way to break it to him that it doesn't always work out like that... Laughing

Fantastic post. So happy for the kid. That is one hell of a bass.

That's the biggest largemouth bass I've seen out of Spring Pond this year. Nice fish! And nice job with the kids!

Slow fishing really seems to be the way to go right now for largemouth bass.

Nice bass! Theres some big bass in there I got one last year the last week of August that was 5 pounds 7 ounces flippin the underlying brush.
An old timer told me once back in the late 90s that someone pulled out a 13 pounder from there but I don't know how accurate that is lol I kept asking him if he means 13 pound carp but he kept saying it was a bass. Rolling Eyes

That bass is probaly just tipping the scales at 6 pounds and I am glad you released him so he can help control the carp population along with mine Laughing
