My wife and I have spent the past week or so fishing a few areas in Farmington. Namely the Reservoir off of Route 6 but also Batterson.

We have fished both areas from shore and Batterson is more of a headache than anything else, but my wife managed to pull in a nice bass two nights ago:

It hit a 3/8 Strike King Bleeding Bait spinner bait in white/red colors at a moderate/fast retrieve. The time was early evening (maybe around 7:45 p.m.). I don't recall the weather. I estimated the fish at between 2.5 and 3.5lbs.

The Farmington Reservoir on the other hand had been quite productive for awhile, but the bite seems to have backed off. Note that "the bite" is a relative term, as most of the fish are not even keepers. We did have some success earlier in the week using spinner baits of various colors, generally slow rolling them with the occasional pause.

For every thousand casts, you need to get something decent, and this one bit a few nights before Batterson in the evening on a very slow-rolled white and blue spinner bait:

On a sad note, it seems both areas have their fair share of poachers... I really wish DEP would run more license/bag checks there more often. I witnessed several small bass that were not possibly 12" go into one fellow's grocery bag. The place really isn't large enough to sustain any taking, let alone illegal taking.

Nice fish! What side were you fishing from the shore at Batterson? Did you park at the boat launch?

As much as I hate to see poaching, I feel for some of the subsistence fishermen I see out there with their buckets.

Hey, fishing is permitted in the Farmington Reservoir? I've never even considered fishing there.

Sweet looking bass, that fish looks to be at least 3.5lbs, probably more.

We were on the Farmington side of Batterson Park - the boat launch is full of weeds, and so is much of the Farmington side. We were actually at what I would think would be the least productive of the shore areas (the ground is wide open, with a horizontal felled tree on the land and a large bag for throwing out trash - basically the furthest spot from the beach before you hit the rocky shores, and the only one without significant weeds). She was using a 7' St. Croix and absolutely winging it as far as she could (she is experienced - this was a far cast).

I'm planning on taking my young cousins to Batterson tomorrow and hope to put them on some fish. Right now it's looking like a wing and a prayer, but I hope a boat will give them an opportunity.

To be clear - it is the reservoir on Reservoir Road off of Route 6. Fishing is permitted, though you are not supposed to disturb the wildlife (which lends me to believe taking of fish is not), and no motor boats are allowed (the sign does not make a distinction between gas and electric). Anything hand-powered is a.o.k.

The place is heavily pressured by shore fishermen, so if you take your kayak I would go after areas they can't get to easily. Spend a half an hour just exploring on foot and you'll find where they are. There's a major beaver factory going on down there, and tons of felled trees. Some parts of them can be reached from the shore, while others can't. Try targeting the upper branches of the fished ones, and all around the ones that need a boat to reach.

As for jobless people poaching, it's easier to take in that instance, but then again, this is a very, very small body of water. It just can't support it. If people take everything they catch indiscriminately, not only will they be jobless tomorrow, but starving. Observing the limits and guidelines benefits everyone, rich and poor.

I just might have to hit up the Farmington Resevoir. I never knew you can fish there. Sounds like a good time.
