Fish camp went to mansfeild today (had my 8 year old nephew also) wanted to go someplace calm. ANyways...water temps were 80 ish with sw winds 10-15. We fished mostly boober stuff (powerbait yellow chunk)..my 8 y/o nephew caught his first fish without any help! Awesome it was a red breasted sunny!!! So cool..anyways we are fishin our way around and we get to an area and a good size fish jumps..i tell my 15 y/o nephew that if i where him i would be throwin the colorado blade spinnerbait that was rigged up...first cast..MONSTER PIKE SWIPES IT RIGHT AT BOAT..NEXT CAST BANG..FIGHTS FISH (it was rippin drag like crazy) for 5 mins or so..now im thknkin how am i gonna land this thing...belly lift..no good.tried to grab it behind head..IT WAS TOO BIG,tried to gill it.no luck..so i take my livewell net and get the head in it and flip it into boat..its on back deck and as soon as i dehook it it starts gettin pissed and flips out of boat. Got one good pic of it in the water at boatside. I have caught alot of bog pike in my day and this one was a solid 12-14 pounds..maybe bigger. Wow i was more fired up than he was i think! Finished the day with some nice fat topwater bass near the launch....phew.

Johnny,
When the kids leave, can I become your new part time nephew?
You can take me out fishing. I promise I will get super excited too.
Heck I would get super excited just to be on a boat. I haven't gone bass fishing in years.

Wondering if I can squeeze some more info about this pike? Where on the lake was it (which side of the culvert, near the dam, etc.)? How deep was the water? Was it in shade or sun? Sorry to be so specific, but I'm trying to figure out some type of summer pike pattern. Mansfield is tough for pike too, even though a lot are in there. Nice catch, though. I haven't got one that big out of there. _________________ Go big or go home! |
