So I'm from Hartford and literally just got into fishing this past weekend. I fish a small amount when I was a kid on camping trips and have not done anything fishing related in nearly 20 years but I picked up my fishing license at Cabelas this weekend
I picked up a Daiwa Rod and Reel and it is quite different from what I used when I was young.
Essentially I wanted something to relax myself and fishing seemed like the right fit since I really need to do some relaxing. I also started doing metal detecting and these 2 hobbies seem to fit each other well since they both involve going to the beach for me.
I do not have a boat at the moment but I am looking at getting a small dinghy with a trolling motor so I can take my wife on the water with me. I'm going to be taking a boating course next week hopefully so I can get my certificate and then the boat.
Being that I am new I do have a couple of question though.
-I'm going to head to Silver Sands Beach tomorrow, anyone have any thoughts on this place? Where to fish?
-Bait, I'm not too familiar with it but what type of bait would I use fishing off the beaches?
-If I want to keep a fish to eat (my father eats all types, and I want to try some since I do like crab) what should I keep it in until I get home to gut it?
Thanks for the info guys and I hope I can eventually repay the favor and help others out as well |

If your fishing saltwater off the beach, it all depends what your going for, if your going for stripers/blues, I personally always use 3 surf casters 10-12'. If you are using 1 rod, I would purchase 2 baits, as a beginner fisherman I would have you start with sandworms and bunker. Nice and easy to hook, When you buy Bunker, you should be able to get 4-5 peices out of each fish. Depending on the tides/wind you should be fine with 3 ounce sinker 15-20 lb test. Make sure with your set up you use a swivel and a slider (you hook your sinker onto this) Get a decent size hook, if your fishing for porgy or something like that then just sandworms and they sell rigs for that. You can go into a lot of bait shops along the shore line and they'll fill you in whats being caught and where, what to use as bait and set ups. Many bait shops are very helpful. Personally If I'm going for a couple hours and its hot out, Ill bring a cooler with a bag of ice or I'll Bleed the fish right when i catch it and then filet it as soon as i rerig all my rogs and cast them back out. |
