|
|
Friday night, SkeeterJim and I fished Highland from 6:30pm to just after 10:45pm. This was in preparation for this Friday nights Tourney (9pm to 6am).
There was an open Tourney going on when we got there, so we tried to say away from them yet find some good spots. We talked to a few of them as we pasted, the bite was good; guys were culling by 8:30.
The water was very choppy with all the jet skiers and pleasure crafts. By around 9pm most all of them were off the water and the lake started to clam down.
Jim and I tried, top water baits with little results. It seemed the bite was on black War Eagles.
I caught one nice sized SMD, pushing 4+. On our way back to the ramp I was using my NEW spot light to look for boats running around with no lights. There was a few of them.
Half the way back, I blew a fuse on my Nav lights, which included the spot light. Now we are running in total darkness. Jim quickly jumped into action and tied glow sticks around the boat as I used a flashlight to drive by.
It was interesting, the next morning I decided to read the instructions on the stop light; and there is was in the smallest print known to man “Install a 10amp fuse for proper use”.
Oooppps. Needles to say, it was changed to a 10amp, and I throw a few extra on the boat for good measure.
This was the first night bass fishing trip for me; it was nice, quite and the bite was on.
Ron

Which War Eagles were working? Jigs, spinners or buzzbaits? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

PECo,
Spinner bait with the large Colorado blade. They would hit it hard. _________________ Sleep...Eat...Fish!!!!! Then do it all over again. |

Hey, SkeeterRon, do you ever put a trailer on a spinnerbait, like a jig 'n pig? I've never been much of a spinnerbait guy, but I caught a decent largemouth bass out in the middle of Batterson earlier this year on a spinnerbait with a swirlytail grub on the hook. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

PECo,
I haven't tried putting a trailer on a spinner bait. I would think that would change the way it sinks.
Bass,
Until that night, that was about the same size I would catch. Jim took a very darken picture that shows the fish, but it's hard to make out. Jim was in Awe when I caught that bad boy.
I'm starting to like night fishing. _________________ Sleep...Eat...Fish!!!!! Then do it all over again. |

I always use a trailer on my spinnerbaits (and I fish w/ them alot). I have found curly tails to be the most productive - but really your just looking for some added action and to thicken up the profile of the bait. I have even taken 6" rubber worms and broke them in half to use as a trailer. The curly tail section is usually much longer on a worm than a grub and gives a more erratic movement. Spinnerbaits are easy to use, can be fished almost anywhere, and just plain catch fish. Another advantage is that you can fish fairly fast w/ them and cover a lot of water looking for active fish. If no bites come on it, then it's time to switch over to a more finesse type of bait and fish slow. This is usually a pretty reliable gameplan to put fish in the boat. |

PECo,
Yes, a plastic trailer will actually cause a spinnerbait to be more bouant and fall slower. This actually helps the fisherman fish slower because the bait needs less speed to stay at the same level in the water column. |

Nice fish Ron!
About the spinnerbait trailers,
I highly suggest using a spinnerbait trailer. I have had the most luck with swirly tail grubs as opposed to more straightened trailers. I usually put the grub on like this:
When I throw a spinnerbait, especially in deeper water (6-12ft), I let it fall for about 4-5 seconds then I reel it in at whatever speed is neccessary and add a few twitches in too. _________________ Catch and release only.
A 4lb bass is not going to grow to 8lbs on your wall.

Glad you took my advice from your other thread. It's always great when that bite is on. |

ron, how long of a ride is highland? I am fishing that tourney to. If you have directions could you please pm them to me? I just picked up some black spinner baits, black buzz baits and black jitter bugs. Now I just need some no dose and 5 monster energy drinks then I should be all set for the 9pm - 6am tourney. I hope the weather and fish cooperate or it will be a long night.
Is there any pads there? _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.
