Greeting!
I'm a long time casual fisherman, but started getting serious about Bass fishing last year. The brother of a good friend of mine has a Tracker, and was looking for a fishing partner, and I'm hooked so to speak. I had a few spinning setups, and over the winter I've purchased 2 baitcasting setups. I'm still practicing and hoping to get less and less backlashes as I get better.
I'm hoping to be an active member of the community and learn some new tips and tricks that will help me improve.

Why did you feel the need to switch from spinning reels to baitcasters? It sounds like the potential for catastrophic failure is much higher with a baitcaster than a spinning reel. I really value simplicity and robustness (is that even a word?), since I fish from a little kayak.

Phil,
I didn't have a lot of spinning gear, so I wasn't replacing anything I currently owned, just adding to it. I still use my spinning reels for skipping under docks, rafts, etc. And I also wanted to begin to use florocarbon, and I've read of issues with spinning reels and heavy lb test. And part of it was that I wanted to see how the other half live, so to speak. I watch a lot of fishing shows on Versus, and everyone uses baitcasting equipment, so I though I'd give it a try. I spent Saturday afternoon on the CT river, and I really only had 3 serious backlashes. 2 of them I was able to get out, using a technique I saw on bassfishin.com, and the 3rd I ended up cutting out. The florocarbon backlashes were easy to get out, the braid was much harder, not sure why. |
