Phil, as far as the Tracker line of boats they are pretty good value for aluminum boats. I have a 12 footer which I modded out into a miniature bass boat with pedestal seats, trolling motor, depth finder and compartments. Well built and sturdy. As far as waiting to get your license before operating, a friend of mine just got a used boat and was given a 60 or 90 (can't remember which)days temporary certificate to operate before having to get the required Life-time Boating Card which you get after completing the safe boaters course. Good luck with ther search and purchase.

Cabela's actually holds the Boater's course like every other Sunday. I also want to buy a boat in the future and will need my license. I was planning on taking the course within the next month or so. It is an 8 hours course from 10am till 6pm on a Sunday.
If this interests you let me know and maybe we can take the class together.

RobO - I just picked up the brochure at Cabela's!
I'm exhausted from staying up until almost 1:00 AM. For me at least, one of the downsides to getting older is that I can't handle lack of sleep well anymore. I'm dying. But I have to go chauffeur my mother-in-law now.

I beleive the cost was either $60 or $80 dollars. Probably the $80. I believe they have a course there this Sunday June 6th.
You need to apply online. Unfortunately I am at work and the brochure is at home. I will post some info on this site later tonight.
So PECo, You interested in trying to take it at the same time?

Peco,
I had an older version of that boat a few years ago. It worked out great. I went on it with my two sons and it was just find.
I think Tracker would be the better choice.

Hi All!
Well to all those that want to get your Ct. Boaters Certificate -> Any where that offers a 1 day course (Cabel's - DEP) is NOT WORTH THE MONEY or TIME!
As a professional mariner I can say with total confidence that the only "REAL" boating instruction that prepares ANY boater to be a responsible and well trained boater is thru your nearest US Coast Guard Auxilliary.
I've sat thru 4 of these so called 1 day courses.
The 1 day course is "SO MINIMAL and Un-Professional" that I could teach a retarded - 1/2 brain dead monkey for what the 1 day course teaches you just to take your money 
If you want to be a responsible and well informed and trained boater -> THEN DO IT RIGHT Get yourself PROPER instruction and Training.
I did 4 years at Mass. Maritime Academy to become a professional mariner.
Do you really think you can learn in 1 day ALL that is necessary to be a good boater 
ANSWER: NO WAY!
Challenge: If you want to be a responsible boater answer this question!
(1st thing I was taught at the Academy)

Seadog1... I do not disagree with you. A one day course may not be enough instruction time for knuckle heads like me or even experienced boaters... Open Water, Big Lakes, Small Lakes, Big Ponds, Little Ponds, Big Rivers, Little Rivers, or Creeks/Streams -> Makes "NO DIFFERENCE WHAT WATER YOUR ON!!!!!!!"
Everyone "HAS TO" obey the Rules of the Road, learn about SAFETY, be COURTEOUS to fellow boaters, learn about WX, and hopefully KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE " -> and this goes for even those that may spend only a few hours per year on the water.
Would you fly in a plane (say a small single engine Cesna) with a pilot that took a 1 day flying course or one that that got proper flight training

In my opinion your better off spending $60.00 at a casino crap table then giving it to Cabela's for the "MINIMAL LOUSY Boating Instruction your going to get!"
Better to win at the crap table then spend your money on a 1 day boaters course -> With the winnings you could spend the money on "REAL PROPER BOATER'S TRAINING!!"
Ha! -> Anyone that got their boaters training from the USCG, USCG-Aux, US Power Squadron will tell you with the utmost discuss what a "TOTAL JOKE any 1 day boaters course IS "

Like I said earlier, I do not disagree you SeaDog1... that there should be a longer, more thorough class.
However, I would bet you that more than three quarters of the guys that are on this site took a one day course (to get their certificate). Are they all boating idiots because they took the 1 day course? Are they all horrible boaters? Do they not follow safety guidelines, or navigate correctly? I don't think so.
I was just trying to share some information to some guys here that were interested in getting their certificate, as I am. I thought that is what this site was all about ...sharing info to other fisherman.

Whoa there buddy -> Never said, uttered a word, or implied that those that took a 1 day course where idiots.
Only said that the 1 day course is Very Very Poor training for a Boaters Certificate and more of a Sham just to get your money!

And that is EXACTLY what I'm doing!
Telling all that want to know that there is "NO SUBSTITUE" for proper training.
It's pretty much the law in all states to go thru Drivers Ed to learn how to drive a car properly and all the road laws that MUST be obeyed!
SO! How long does it take to go thru drivers Ed
A LOT MORE THEN 1 DAY
Trouble is -> There are laws to have to get a Boaters Certificate in most states, BUT the time requierment for proper boaters training is not there!
Plop your money down -> Take a 1 day boaters course -> Get your Certificate -> and then for some its off to the races!!!!!!
A boat can cause damage (wake and wash included), injury, or death just as much as a car can.
Yes! There are a lot of very good boaters out there that only took a 1 day course, BUT, there are also a LOT of BAD Boaters that only took a 1 day course just to get their certficate and then care NOTHING about how they operate their boat without consideration for their fellow boaters.
We have ALL seen this on Ct. waters at some time each year!
OK RobO! You may be one of the exceptions, BUT, there a LOT of people that will take the "QUICKY 1 day course", just to get that boaters certificate and FORGET everything they learned in that 1 day. Like drivers with heavy gas pedal foots -> Some boaters with big hp motors just have to push that throttle wide open and care nothing about any marine courtesy towards their fellow boaters.
AGAIN, There is "NO SUBSTITUE" for proper boaters training
And "THAT is going to take more then 1 day!"
Yearly USCG statistics show that more and more boats are being put on US waters and that boating accidents continue to rise dramaticly each year
And without any doubt or argument the USCG sites that the primary cause is lack of proper boater's training
This is HARD FACT not Fiction!
Your boat -> Your Life -> Everyones Life (Children?) in your boat with You Driving.
SO! The question IS -> How well where you trained to operate your boat SAFELY (of any size and hp).

I agree with you 100%.
I like your comment about drivers ed.
There are still some many fools out on the road that somehow got their drivers license, yet they are complete idiots.
I beleive they should make the boating course longer and more educational.
Just after I get my 1 day certificate.. Just kiddiing..
