Well I'm glad this is the Bass Fishing Reports section and not the Bass Catching Reports section.........
I hit Silver Lake with my 5 year old son yesterday from about 12:30pm until about 2:30pm. The lake was free of ice except for a couple of small spots on the northern tips of the islands where the sun hasn't shone on them much. I forgot my electronics, so I had to ask another angler on the water what the water temps were. The water temps were 40 to 44 degrees depending where on the lake you were. We fished from 2 feet of water to 8 feet of water, I think (no electronics). The air temp was about 55 degrees, and a slight breeze from time to time made it feel a little chilly, but I never put on the winter coat and the sun on my face felt great.
I gave the little guy a wacky rigged senko type bait on the ole tigger pole, and he hauled water all afternoon, but he practiced his casting and by the time we left he had it down pretty well. We fished from the back, towards the launch, along the railroad tracks. I switched over to the windblown point opposite the launch and threw a luckycraft jerkbait and a rattletrap for a few minutes, but the little guy complained and started mumbling about being cold so I moved back out of the wind for him, knowing that's probably where the fish were. But if you want your young kids to grow up loving fishing, then you have to make their trips short and fun, which means warm too, and with lots of snacks and juice boxes. I also threw a texas rigged senko type bait, a jig, a shakey head with a chigger craw on it, and a tube with no takers, I got the skunk. I spoke with 1 angler who was there for 5 hours and caught only 1 pickeral on a jig in 8 foot of water. It was a beautiful afternoon, my little guy had fun, and the motor ran great with old gas in it, and a personal watercraft was just pulling into the launch site when we left, so it was a great afternoon. Maybe not so much for the few boats still on the water when we left, damn personal watercraft.......... _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

Good story.
Weather permitting, next weekend, Im gonna be at some local pond, or standing at my empty slip, with 2 princess poles, and a fresh cup of walmart worms, Juice boxes, fruit chews, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
In a weird sort of way, makes for some of the best fishin trips. |

Yeah, it is always good quality time spent on the water. He made me laugh at one point. He said " Dad we have the coolest boat here." Looking at my old tin can with the 40Hp evinrude surrounded by sparkly bass boats and others much newer, I said "Oh Yeah, why do you think that?" He replied," Because I have a bright blue push button on my tigger pole, and we have 1 of those" (pointing to the electric trolling motor). He thinks it is great that we can move around the lake without the big motor and hold position in the wind with the electric trolling motor. Too funny.......... _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

It's great to hear reports about people getting their kids out fishing. He sounds like a smart kid slimecoat. The blue button is key, I know from experience. I try to get my kids out as often as I can. Since I am a shore fisherman right now, they tend to throw more sticks and pebbles into the water than lures. But at least I'm planting the seed and the spiderman fishing poles help them concentrate for a bit too.
I took them out to a youth ice fishing derby a couple of weeks ago and they just loved it. The hot cocoa, hot dogs and chips were a real hit and even though we didn't catch anything they loved it and can't wait to go back. The free ice fishing rod and reel and tip up that they were given as door prizes helped out too. It's funny how sometimes you don't have to catch fish to have a great day of fishing. |

awesome report gary. My 3 year old is dying to go. I have to buy him a new rod as I broke his last year. I was fishing with it and set the hook on a bass that was in some cover. I lost the bass, caught a tree and snapped the rod. I am going to wait till it gets a little warmer. The last 3 trips I had with him, he got skunked so I want to make sure the action is there before we go. He is a trooper though and he loves it just as much as his old man. Nothing better than seeing your little guy/girl real in a fish. It is what being a dad is all about. _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Absolutely Bass addict, it has to be fun for them each time or they will never remember it or want to keep going. I really like to hit Lower or Middle Bolton lake but they are both still iced- in I believe. They both have 6hp limits so no jet ski's or large wakes, and both have plenty of sunfish and perch to keep him reeling in the forage while I target the predator species. I can definately see a difference in him as far as the love of fishing goes, as opposed to my 17 year old who can take it or leave it. He is more of an active sports fan, like basketball. Nothing wrong with that either..........I guess _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

Gary,
Nice report... Thanks for beeping on your way by.. I was in the garage putting way all the new bass fishing toys I purchased over the winter.
My son came running over and said "OMG, He's going fishing, lets follow him!"
Too funny.
A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work! That's for sure... _________________ Sleep...Eat...Fish!!!!! Then do it all over again. |

Yeah Ron, I got your message when I got to the lake. I had my phone in the boat when I passed your house and beeped. _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

I tried a few places and nothing but one sunny caught on my 4 year olds barbie real/rod.
One small pond had CLEAR water where i seen a number of bass 1 probably 4lbs+ and 2 pickerel. They didnt hit any swimbait I tried, nor did they hit a few jerkbaits (1 suspending), no hits on the rattle trap, spinner bait, or jigged grub!!!!
Any suggestions? _________________

Schmoe, I think you are talking about my avatar. I caught the mako on the far left. It was a freeport hudson anglers tourney in 2008. _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Great job Gary. He got the "ole" skunk...... but at least he had fun and you taught him how Dad fishes. Next time out he'll be showing YOU how it's done. Nothing beats quality time with your kids as they grow up sooo fast.

Nice job getting out there with your son, I was out there as well last weekend got some crappies and my first bass of the year on tubes and small husky jerk. Fishing was slow and we only got 1 pickeral on a shiner. My friend and I were trying to get rid of our left over ice fishing shiners but the fish didn't want them. Kudos to you for gettng the little guy out there. _________________ Bite on my line. |
