Can anyone shed some light on success with Smelting in the Ct.. Ma. area?
We were at Lake Onata in Pittsfield, Ma yesterday and could not buy a smelt and in speaking with others on the Lake, no one had success. (Maybe Seadog can help with this). A funny note, vehicles were all over this Lake and
we had between 15-18 inches of ice.
We were at Colebrook last week and picked up five smelt over 4 hours.

SeaDog is perhaps your best source.
I do know that Smelt are few and far between in CT waters.
As far as trucks on the ice... I like my truck far too much to drive it over any body of water that didnt have a structure that was supported by steel girders beneath it! . Dont care how thick the ice is!! Thanks to the Good Lord, i have 2 legs capable of walking out on the ice. |

Hi Guys!
Yes! I went up to Onota the saturday before the SuperBowl.
Caught over 2 dozen smelt (6 to 7 inches).
Fished in 45 to 50 ft. of water straight out from the boat ramp and 5 cranks up from the bottom.
Used a bright yellow Kodiak Ice Jig (much like a Hali) with chain and 16# red treble hook. This was attached to a very small hook real fish skin Sabiki rig (cut in two) -> thus I had 4 hooks on 1 rig which was 1 under the legal limit of 5 in Ma.
This rig is much easier to jig and get back out the ice hole than having a full size rig.
I tipped the hooks with spikes and Gulp Alive waxies. Both work equally well.
Fried up the smelt for the SuperBowl and they were delicious.
Went up to Onota today (2/15/10) to see if I could hook more smelt.
Dissapointing day -> only caught 2 -> Was also a slow day for everyone else smelting.
Have not tried smelting in Ct. as of yet this year.
Colebrook and Hogback are the only 2 waters in Ct. that have smelt.
