Fished on Friday in 12 feet of water for 4 hours caught 1st brownie within half an hour on shiner then missed a flag an hour later and ended up with a second brownie at the end of the day! 2 guys landed a nice Atlantic Salmon about 4 lbs at first light. But my lazy but wasn't on the ice til 10:30 Cool

Saturday I took my son out to target some of these Atlantic Salmon from 9:30 til 1:30. We only set up 6 tip ups cuz it was A$$HOLE cold wind blowing and had to clean the holes every 20 minutes. Fished til 12:30 until 1st flag and the line was screaming off the real! Realed up a 20" Atlantic and an hour later a smaller Salmon that my son pulled up made for some nice fillets we'll be eating tonight! Very Happy I'll post a pic when I figure it out

How are you targeting the salmon... are you using the same approach as fishing for trout(fishing just below the ice) What bait?...I'm thinking of heading to Mt. Tom this weekend.

Great job with the salmon. Were you in the bait shop down the road from Mt. Tom Sat morning for bait (your son looks familiar)?

I was in the bait shop down the road that Saturday morning! Wink

I actually tried various depths using medium shiners and not much seemed to be working all day. So with talking to 2 fellows on Friday that landed that 4# Salmon and doing a little research on targeting salmon through the ice I pulled all my tip-ups just below the ice in around 20-30 feet of water. Maybe it was dumb luck Rolling Eyes Not sure, but within 10 mins I caught the bigger of the 2 fish and maybe 30mins after that the second fish came up. I believe I just happened on finding the perferred thermalcline at that time and was just in the right spot at the moment. Surprised
Question I've heard and found to be true that day , That for effectively catching salmon through the ice to fish in deep water but fish within the top 8 feet or so of the surface. If anyone else has anything to add to this I'd sure like some more input myself because "THOSE FISHES WERE DELICIOUS" Laughing Laughing

I headed out to Mt.Tom on Tues 2-9.... I also did some research online about targeting salmon through the ice & found the same info...... fish just below the ice in deep waters.... I set up in about 30 ft of water & 1-2 feet below the ice. I didn't get any flags all day. I fished from 7:30 to 1:30. There were a few other guys out there, some were using the same fishing tactics as I & some were fishing the bottom all with the same luck as I.....not sure if the so called "Big Storm" on Wed. through the fishing off or what, but i will be heading back to try again this weekend
