I fished recently in a local pond in Avon and i have this weird thing happening to me.I set up my tip ups with large minnows and after a little while when i check them i always find 4-5 bait fish with the head chewed ,or one side of the head missing.ONLY THE HEAD!the rest of the minnow seems to be untouched.I suspect that something just attacks the minnow just to kill it.And the weird thing is that it would not trip the tip up.Any suggestions??? |

FALLFISH happens to me too. If they can't fit the minnow in their mouth they kill it on purpose. I fished a lake that was full of them so when I caught them I stepped on there heads as well. There not small either I was catching them to 15 inches. |

Ya people also call them river dace or dace. They look like an overgrown minnow. Neat colors through the ice though like purlpe and pink. |

Oh yeah... those. caught plenty of em ...
If I recall, they fight pretty decent when using trout ultralight gear, but are a let down when you see em up close. |

I am from Transylvania and there this fish is like large mouth bass here.We did not have any predator except pike that we could fish for in the winter.Somehow i did not have the same experience catching them through the ice.Fishing is still very primitive there as they do not know anything about tip ups.I think i was the first fishermen to bring some over and show them how its done.Still this bite pisses me off.I wish i could catch some smaller ones to go for pike.Anyone having suggestions where?Maybe i could catch them on a regular trout worm on a floating rig? |

I would think pinhead shiners, and a #8 or #10 hook could work. in some slow flowing rivers, I used to catch them by accident on tiny trout spinners.
Im sure they make GREAT pike bait tho!! |
