Fished Lake Monticello in South Carolina today. This is the lake where I had the good jigging spoon bite a week or two ago.
The cold weather has finally broken here in SC. It was 65 yesterday, and looks like weather in the 50's to low 60's next week too.
Conditions:
Air temp 50
Water temp 55(near Power station)
Cloudy turning to rain.
The power plant had been shut down, but they turned it back on last week. Water temp was 45 down the other end of the lake to 55 where I had my best day on Monti in a while.
Caught all my fish on a 3/8 oz War eagle SB.
There was a 200 yrd stretch of shoreline that was absolutely loaded with shad. I even caught a few on the trebles of a jerkbait that I tried. No fish on shakey head , jerkbait, or crankbait. Only the spinnerbait would produce for me. And boy did it produce. All these bass came from that small stretch of shoreline. Some were just FAT full of shad.
This is 1 of the only lakes in SC that has smallmouths in it. Can only survive because this lake has some 120ft deep areas! Caught a little guy, and another LMB.
Then was rewarded with the biggest smallmouth I have caught in a long time! Has to be close or might beat my PB for a SMB. Weighed 5.9lbs on my digital. When this fish hit, I thought I had hooked into a blue cat. Then she jumped clear of the water. A mighty battle, but I got her in. Even after all the bass I have caught, this one had me shaking for a few minutes!
All bass released to catch again another day!
If your sick of walking on water, SC is only 14hrs from CT. Dig them boats out and come on down! _________________ "Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths." - Jimmy D Moore |

I am so jealous, thanks for the great report with pics. Nice smallie Hawg, and better yet was the surprise when you didn't think you were going to have her on the end of the line. _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |
