Bought for the 2 day for spinnerbaits as a quick combo. Didn't realize it was a 7.1:1 ratio so spinnerbaits are out. Only used a few trips out. No rush to sell but no big need to keep either. Interested it's yours for $50

"The Exceler reel has a super-fast 7.1: 1 gear ratio and Magforce® -Z automatic magnetic anti-backlash control. Eight ball bearings, plus roller bearing. One-piece aluminum frame with swept handle and star drag design. Infinite anti-reverse. Capacity: 150 yds/12-lb. line. The Exceler rod features a highly sensitive graphite blank, Fuji® O-ring aluminum oxide guides and cork grips. "

I use 7.1:1 for spinner baits all the time. Also, a more accurate indicator of the reel speed is how much like is recovered with 1 full revolution.

Give the spinner baits a shot on the 7:1. There are definitely times of the year where burning a spinnerbait on a 7:1 works, and fall is one of them. Just my 2 cents.

I also throw all my spinnerbaits and rattle traps on a 7:1.1 reel. If you need to burn them you've got the speed, if not you just need to reel so slow it hurts. Most bass up here in CT are not 5lb. plus, so you really don't need that extra low gear for power winching big fish, unless your flipping really thick nasty stuff with braid, and I use a totally different rod and reel for that purpose.

Thanks for the advice guys. To be honest with you I haven't tried burning spinnerbaits too much. Especially this time of year. I've had a terrible year with spinnerbaits; not a single fish no matter what i do and where I go. But I next tournament is on Sunday and perhaps I'll have to give burning a try.

As with the combo it's self I can find other uses for it but I figured I'd post and see if anyone was interested. If not it doesn't bother me and I'll definately keep using it. Thanks guys.

I was taught that burning them in spring and fall can be really productive but that of course the fish are going to ultimately tell you how fast they want it. You'll see spinnerbaits with double willow blades called "scorchers" or "burners." They're usually pretty heavy. The one I used most recently was a Strike King "Bottom Dweller." It can be used as a slow roller that you want to keep deep because of it's weight, but it's also great as a burner because it's designed to stay down. That makes it easier to keep sub-surface when you're burning it.

I'm still learning, and no expert by any means, but the guy that taught me about this is.

Djmon the last several trips that I have gone out within the last 2 weeks, I have been fishing the colorado blade spinnerbait and it has been my most productive lure. Considering that they are great search baits for the limited time I have, I have just been varying retrieves (burning, medium speed, and slow rolling them so I tick the top of the grass or even ripping them through the grass). As always I let the bass tell me how they want it. Don't count them out, just gotta give them a chance.
