Hit Lakeville today with Ryan, a young man from my church. We were on the water by 8:00 and off at 2:30. Water temp was 80 degrees wind was pretty strong out of the east almost forming white caps on the lake for most of the day. That made if difficult to stay on spots and took time to get back on spots after catching and releasing fish.
Ryan hadn't been fishing in quite a while and had never fished a drop shot before. He was a quick learner. He wound up with 7 fish total 2 nice bass at 2# and 2+# and 5 pickrel all on the drop shot.
Here's his two bass.
I had a total of 9 fish 2 bass one of which was a nice 3# and 7 pickrel one of which I estimated at 4+#. He was a little ticked off and I had to wack him on the head with the pliers to get him to stop trying to bite me. In his stunned state I took the picture. No worries, he swam away just fine and I didn't have to put the Linder Fish Handling gloves to the ultimate test.
Here's the bass followed by the pickrel.
As you can see the pickrel was so fat, I couldn't get my whole hand around him. The pickrel have been very agressive lately, maybe that's why we've had trouble finding the bass more. Bass appeared to be shallower today.in 8-12' of water. The pickrel seemed to be there and deeper out to 18'. Our first two bass came from the sparse weedbed just off the launch to the left. The remainder of the fish came off humps, which in the abundantly bright bluebird skies today you could see a distance off in the water as they showed up quite lighter than the surrounding water.
It was a very hot but enjoyable day. The bite was good from 8-12 when we caught all our fish. A 16 fish day in 4 hours is just fine by me. Ryan's a quality young man who I was glad to spend some time with and get to know better. Hope we can fish together again, |
