As a disclaimer, this local pond at the end of my street is referred to on some maps as Nig's Pond. That's the name of the pond, it has no racial connotations whatsoever.
I like testing out stuff down here sometimes, but the pond is otherwise a poor place to fish. There are very few spots clear enough to cast, and much of the water is very shallow. There's a lot of downed wood, so one is really limited to baits and plastics unless you want to risk losing something more valuable. I fished a weightless, generic orange worm with red glitter flakes. Temperature was probbaly in the 70s, and overcast. First fish came pretty quickly, probably a half pounder around 8 inches long. Tried a few other spots which were mostly full of garbage (not bad fish, literally, garbage). Was about to head home when I saw a big splash toward the end of the pond. Unfortunately, it was another "covered in shallow water and trash" part but I had a pseudo-Carolina rig that was pretty weedless so I gave it a shot. Felt resistance and moved to set the hook, but there was no tug or fight so I figured I hooked up on one of the many pieces of wood and started cursing myself for being an idiot and bothering to cast there. Started bringing my rod high and reeling in to see where the snag was when it ended up being the fish I saw. He was about the same size as the other. I threw him back out as far as I could, but it was still very shallow. I saw the dorsal fin moving through the shallows out toward open water at a good pace so I'm pretty sure he made it back safe. Most of the bass I've seen in this small pond are stunted. I assume this is because of poor oxygen flow.
I told myself to bring a camera but figured I wouldn't actually catch anything, so pics will come next time. Oops. |

It really bothers me that this pond, like many small ones in my town are just FULL of trash. I'll take some pictures of the trash. there's literally stuff like a laundry hamper with crap in it, a plastic garbage bin full of garbage on its side, fireworks tubes, fishing line everywhere, cans, bottles, plastic bags, a few CHAIRS, an entire car hood...really makes me mad. |

Parts of the Pequabeck river that I fish in Bristol are like that. Just remember when you find a shopping cart buried in sand underneath a bank there just might be a 22 inch brown trout living there... |

haha bluegill....I caught one of the biggest smallies Ive landed off of a shopping cart in the shetucket river in windham...somewhere around 4lbs. When I released him he went right back to it and it was not a spawn time of the year. _________________ You can play on your computer and hang out with your girlfriend if you want....Im gonna go fishin. |

Rook, breakout the broom stick with heavy line and a weighted saltwater snagger. Or throw a big rock on top of it and tell them it isn't your fault that their boat hit your rock _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Rookie, I've never caught any sizable bass at Mondo pond. There does seem to be a very bad overpopulation of bluegill. They were spawning today and putting up nice fights on light tackle, but the egg bearing females are very small. Both the bluegill and pumpkinseeds are very small. Ditto to the yellow perch, they're all stunted. Sometimes I'm in the mood to take some home but the size makes it hardly worth it.
I did "catch" a catfish out of there today. It was dying after spawning and I waded in down that main dropoff right near the school side entrance and grabbed it. Going to use the meat for tommorrow night's fishing - waste not want not. |

There are some really nice bass in mondo you wouldnt think are there. Ive been surprised a couple times by getting my personal best in there. My user pic is one of them. I have caught 2 fish over 6 pounds, on seperate seasons. Caught many other nice fish there, but its a shot in the dark. Can go there and spit in the place over and over, but i keep going back because its less than a mile from my house. Its nice to get out and throw around some lure for an hour or two, but thats about it. Leaves me frustrated more than not.
Ive seen several catfish over the last few weeks, and also say a half dead one. There are also crappie in the ponds, which i never seen or knew about until this year.
I emailed the police about the remote boat idiots. I got a response and am surprised to read in the law, people arent even supposed to have dogs down there. Im sure many of them would be suprised to know walking a dog down there, even on a leash is breaking the law :eeeeek:
