Had a couple hours to kill on Saturday and the weather wasn't half bad so I headed out in the kayak. Spent most of the day throwing frogs with a few small fish early on. A decent number of hits through the day. Ended up boating 3 of them. Missed the hookset on what was surely the biggest one.

Setting the hook with the frog has proved diffcult. I'd say less than 50% hook up for the day. It seems especially tough low in the water in the kayak. I think I'll try to shorten my casts next time so perhaps I have a better angle.

At the end of the day I pulled the kayak out and hit a spot near a dam before I left. Turned out that was way more productive than fishing in the boat! I wonder why I bother. Got four fish in 15 minutes including this, by far the largest of the day:

frogs are tough to get good hook sets. You literally have to wait until the bass inhales it, then once you feel the weight of the fish and your pole flops over, then set the hook. If you are like me, that is easier said then done. Rolling Eyes

Also, a pointer I got from just4fun was to have a backup bait to try and follow up a missed fish. Something like a weighted lizard, brushhog, weighted worm - to see if you can get another shot at her.

Regardless, how you did on the yak, it is still relaxing to get out there. Land doesn't compare. I would rather skunk on the water then fish from land.

Nice fish. A few that I caught this weekend out of Falls River also had that black lip.

Bass Addict, I'm gonna try that follow up bait next time I miss a topwater fish, and be careful what you say about shore fishing Wink

If I had a boat I'd probably have the same outlook as you do!!

Thanks, guys. And I really do enjoy fishing from the boat more, but it's just a little frustrating Smile

The backup bait is a good idea, but I made an effort this time to go easy on the gear. I sometimes get carried away and bring too much stuff for the kayak. I have to find the happy medium somehow.

super flukes are a good follow up/back up bait when fishing the weeds with a frog or something.....
