Went down to the shore Saturday morning for my usual weekend routine. Lauched the kayak around 10am to mess around a bit before my friends arrived. Paddled out a bit far, got a call from my friend and was about to turn back when... WHAM!

After about 10 min of this thing dragging my kayak in circles, I was able to land it. I was going to try and keep it until I found it impossible to row back with the fish... I was actually drifting further out while trying. Before tossing it back, I tried snapping some pics which proved to be quite difficult. Here's the best attempt...

The fish measured 40 inches even. I'd guess the weight to be 30-35 lbs. My personal best so far Smile

After that I fished the remainer of the day from shore with my friend. I got 3 more schoolies, and 3 porgies. He got a huge blackfish, 3 schoolies, and 4-5 porgies. Was a great day!

Nice job, it's tough getting a good shot by yourself. I'm still looking for my first striper of the year, I haven't looked very hard though. Just hoped I'd get lucky in the river.

Nice job man! That's a good looking fish. It looks like you've got a UFO flying over your shoulder too. Very Happy

Thanks guys! It was pretty unreal having that thing in my lap on the kayak. I was definitly not prepared for a fish like that, but lesson learned for next time!

The UFO there is actually part of the tube n worm rig I was using.

Whenever I'm kayak fishing for stripers, I always use a trolling tube with real sand worms. The tube I was using here was bubblegum pink. The worms are a bit pricey at $6/dozen but well worth it imo.

When I hooked up with this fish I was actually on the phone, and drifting extreamly slow. I'm convinced it's best to troll as slow as possible since I seem hook up more often when i'm just drifting or paddling veeeeery slow. Definitly an advantage of the kayak.

The sensation of a fish dragging you in a small craft like that is a crazy rush... I'm totally hooked on ocean kayak fishing and there will be much more to come Wink

Thanks Lou, just wondering what you got it on. What you said kind of reminds me of the "Old Man and the Sea" movie where Spencer Tracy hooks into a giant tuna which pulls him out to sea. At least your striper didn't get devoured by sharks! Very Happy
