When I was first learning about jigs, I saw a video by KVD and got Denny Brauer's book. Both of them said that they always trim the weedguard and the skirt on a new jig,..so that's what I've always done too! At this point as soon as I get new jigs, I trim them all before they ever get near my boat. That way,..on the water whenever I pull one out to use it is always ready to fish with!
This is how I trim them: First, I bunch up the skirt towards the back of the hook and then cut it off slightly longer (about 1/4" longer..) than the hook. Then I take nail clippers and cut off most of the bristles in the weedguard down by the jighead. I only leave about 6-8 bristles (I think they come with 30!!). I do not trim them lengthwise. I squeeze the jig in my hand to get a feel of how much force it takes to feel the point of the hook,.....when I am done it is not very much! (Note: it takes almost nothing to deflect the weight of the jig when you are pulling it over an obstacle if you do it slowly,...so even 3 or 4 bristles is actually enough to keep it weedless if you pull softly and are not jerking on it!)
Then when I do feel a fish,..I'm jerking pretty much as hard as I can and I definitely get that hook into the fish! _________________ "If people concentrated more on the really important things in life there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."
