Played hookey yesterday afternoon and hit a small pond that is only about 5 minutes from my house. Horrible access road, just barely wide enough to take my bass boat. This lake is known to have some monsters in it. 14lbs is the lake record I am told. Met 2 guys from my bass club fishing off of a dock.
Water temp was 51 and I tried some jigging spoonin for a while. Nothing. Then I put on a shakey head and a zoom speed worm. Tried a rocky point that went from about 3ft out to 17ft. Caught some nice bass in the 3lb range had to be very slow with the bait to get bit.
Made a cast in about 6 ft and felt a little tick. I set the hook and the fight was ON. I knew this was a bigger fish. The fish rolled once near the top and I thought maybe 5lbs. I hardly EVER get the net unless I'm in a T. The bass came near the boat and I saw these big ol bug eyes and I scrambled for the net. I scooped her up and couldn't believe the size of this fish. She weighed 9lbs 2 oz on my scale. FAT and full of eggs. The head on this fish was massive! And the eyes were crazy, size of quarters! ON 8lb test! Beat my PB by 1 lb.
I thought about putting her in the livewell and calling my son to bring the camera(I didn't bring it!)but I didn't want to stress this bass any more. Released to fight another day. Oh and the guys on the dock caught a 8lb bass and a 6 and a bunch of other bass.
It is ON here in SC!! I'm going back again will bring the camera this time! Next few weeks will be hot fishing. _________________ "Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths." - Jimmy D Moore |
