stopped by mackenzie res on break just to cure the itch for this fishing year.

small area thawed to fish so i brought a few rods and played around

no bites however oddly didn't leave empty handed. was using a jig with yum craw scent and ended up with a crawfish on the line

guess it works for something atleast Laughing

Pretty cool,...I've never heard of anyone doing that before!!
I remember reading somewhere that crawfish don't become active until the water temp gets to about 50,...but I guess you busted that myth based on that ice-pack where you were fishing!! Wink

Actually, I would disagree with the information you received Mark. I used to go smelting in Maine where you would dip nets in streams for the smelts while they were spawing. On a few unproductive nights we did notice LOTS of crayfish doing their dance in the stream we were searching with a spotlight. I'm not sure if their spawning time is just around ice out (the ice was still 3/4 covering the pond this stream flowed into) or what, but they were definitely active. Many were all over each other . . . fighting, mating, dancing, . . . I don't know, but I wouldn't doubt one would grab a craw looking jig this time of year after witnessing this type of occurance a few times.

Had the same thing happen to me last year about the same time frame. When I let it go, the crawfish took of like lightning. Was surprised it moved so quick in 30 degree water.
