Went on a little excursion yesterday to go fishing with a buddy of mine. Thought maybe with the warmer weather and rain that Highland would be open, but found out after a nice little drive up there that the lake is frozen over. So we headed south to Rogers and had a pretty decent day.

Water temp was 36 degrees and we had to break a thin sheet of ice at the launch all the way out to main lake. Figured with the light wind and somewhat overcast skies, we'd slay them on jerkbaits. Started off somewhat slow, had two solid strikes, but nothing hooked up. Kept switching colors, sizes and depths until we found the right combo...Lucky Craft Pointer.

We had some good luck catching smaller fish and BIG pickerel in the isolated grass patches from 6 to 12 fow. But it seemed to be the points in the same depth range close to deep water that held the big largies. Between the two of us, we had one that probably was 5 in the summer, but it was a loooong 4, another that was close to 4, a couple over the 3 mark and a few that were a pound to a pound and a half. Sorry, no camera to take pictures.

All-in-all it was a pretty good day considering the water temp and we both managed to get all of our baits back from them damn toothy critters. I even had one that I flipped in the boat that didn't have a hook in it, rather, the line was wrapped in and around its mouth...thank you P-Line for holding up.

Yeah, it seems like this place is a ghost town for people posting things...and it's few and far between for guys fishing these days.

Changed it up a lot, but had most of them on a Point 100 in Ghost Minnow and Golden Shiner. Had some strikes on the DD series (various colors) and a Staysee in Japanese Minnow.

Thanks for the info Justin. I'll have to try those baits next time I'm over there in the cold water

That's a great job,...just out of curiosity, how long were you pausing with the jerkbait to get the bass? This time of year,..all I ever get on a jerkbait is pickeral.

It was a looooong pause. The quicker I moved the bait, the more pickerel I got. I couldn't rip the bait, it was more of a slow twitch. Some bites were the typical line-straightening bites, while others were more of the bass was just holding the bait on the pause and when I went to move it again, it was on.
