Hey guys! I havent posted in a while but i have been on the water just about every weekend.
As I mentioned before this is my first season really getting into bass fishing and Im very muched hooked (no pun intended). Because of your guys great tips Ive made alot of progress over the summer and hope to fish some tournaments with you guys when I get to that level. I think I still have a ways to go before I would be a worthy tournament partner.
I was having good luck durring the summer w/ senkos, tubes, and the occasional spinner or buzz. But since the fall has come I strugle to get even one on most days. From what Ive been reading from this bass book I guess I have to fish the deeper weed edges but I dont have any kind of sonar or fish finder yet to find deep water structures. Just my depth finder which I use to find the drop off points. But still get nothing but the occasional lucky hit.
Just wondering if theres any advice anyone can give to help breath some life back into my rapidly declining confidence at this.... dare I say.... new passion of mine. Sorry if Im sounding too dramatic. It just suks getting skunked every weekend. |

white spinner baits just off the weedlines. Works like a charm. |

Hey New Guy,
First of all, you need to invest in some nice electronics, ask santa for a nice Garmin, Hummingbird, or Lowrance unit, or tell everybody to get you Bass pro shops gift cards for christmas, pool them together and get the best one you can afford.
The name of the game in Fall when the water temps fall below 60 degrees is either super fast moving baits like buzzbaits over shallow weeds, rattle traps or spinnerbaits over deeper weedbeds, or slow way down, I mean so slow that it kills you with boredome. Try a drop shot rig over deep rockpiles, a blade bait or spoon vertically jigged, a deep shakey head worm, the carolina rig, a jig, a tube, or a super fluke or jerkbait.
All the above can put fish in the boat in Fall, but the key is finding the baitfish, and without good electronics your fishing blind. Good luck, I hope this helps...... _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

are fish too deep in the fall to fish from shore? Now that I'm back at school the bite is way off from the shore. And no, I don't have a boat...haha. _________________ 6.5' Penn Long Beach with a Penn 330Gti for deep sea

Not necessarily Wishin, very often they corral bait and bust them against a shallow bank or flat. _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

Short answer is no,..but if you can find a deeper hole near the shore, or a steeper shoreline to fish from,..then so much the better!
Newguy, ditto what slimey said about dropshotting. If you do not already use that technique then it's time to learn! Can't tell you how many times a DS has saved me from skunking, but it's a big number!! It works year round,..but it's really gonna pay off for you as the water temp goes lower!
As the water gets colder from here (ie less than 50 degrees..) the bass are going to begin transitioning into their winter mode. This means that their metabolism will slow and they will be less and less likely to chase anything or even move very much. It also means they will pull out to deeper water because the shallow weeds will be gone and also because it's just a more stable environment for them without any rapid temperature shifts. At this time,..all the fish in the lake will be bunched up because food is not a primary concern for them,...stability, oxygen and survival are the main things! I'm not saying that they stop eating,..bass get caught through the ice all the time,...but they need to eat a lot less and they will not spend much energy to obtain their food,..so when you're fishing in late fall and winter,..slow it down until you can't stand it,..then slow it some more!! Put your cranking hand in your pocket and listen to a ballgame on the radio etc. etc.! The best baits are going to have no movement,..they should look dead or at the most, just barely alive!!
Note: You will see articles in the mags about how great winter fishing can be, how you can "load the boat" with lunkers etc etc,..but outside of a few rare exceptions (most of which involve smallies...) the fact is that once the water is stable at 45 and below,..catching even ONE fish of any species on artificial bait is going to be a successful outing for most folks! _________________ "If people concentrated more on the really important things in life there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."
