I just picked up a relatively inexpensive rapala digital scale, and I was wondering whats the best way to use it. I've seen it done by having the hook placed behind the gill plate, where the mouth meets the gill, and i've seen it done by putting the hook right through the bottom lip. I'd imagine putting it under the gill plate can be dangerous to the fish? |

It's a tough decision.... It is dangerous to put the hook near its gills because if they get damaged it can compromise the fish's life and I've never been an advocate of putting unhealable holes in a fish's mouth but that's up to you.....Ive seen way too may fish that have huge gapping holes in their mouths that you could put your hand through....... it doesnt look very good.....
I prefer the scales that have the two claws that load up with the spring. (like a boca grip) They dont peirce a hole but hold the fish very tight......
It's a tough decision...... _________________

I go through the gills but I am also very careful. I have yet to see a fish that has not swam away. If you keep them out of the water to weigh them, regardless of where you weigh them from, always take the time to resuscitate them by holding their lip and moving water through their mouths/gills. They will let you know when they are ready to swim off.
I always check the accuracy of my scale by weighing a 2.5lb weight and a 5lbser. Just to make sure it is accurate. I do that from time to time. _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Just because they swim away doesnt mean that they live justin. Not trying to be a smart ass or the like but honestly there isnt much need try anything near the gills. Id rather poke a tiny hole with the scale or use the same I hooked the fish with if it turns out to be that big.
But then again, I use my own custom culling clips that use a stringer style clip to hold the culling clip in. |

I dont agree with Nick on many things(haha) but I always try to use the same hole that my hook came out of. I never put it under the gill plate...to many bad things could happen being careful or not. You can never predict what a fish is goin to do. |

I'd would go for the claw type scales, they're do the least damage to the fish so they can be caught again _________________ 6.5' Penn Long Beach with a Penn 330Gti for deep sea
