Went out for my usual after work trip on Wednesdays and decided to take the trek to Halls Pond in the kayak. Beautiful evening with a very light wind when I arrived ~ 6PM. Water temps were consistently 76 degrees.
Took me a while to get my first bite, and it ended being a ~2lbs pickerel on a senko. Worked the drop shot quite a bit but I think the presentation might not have been great; it felt like the rig was getting caught up in the pondweed too much. I think if I fish the drop shot there again, I'll go with more distance between the weight and the hook.
After the sun went down, I switched to a black spinnerbait. Missed a few hits on that and finally caught a bass, a little under 2 lbs.
Tied on a black jointed jitterbug as there seemed to be some top water activity by the fish. Hooked into a feisty pickerel shortly thereafter, this one closer to 2.5 lbs.
Went without a fish for awhile and just when I was getting ready to wrap up around 9 the jitterbug got destroyed by a good sized bass. Got the fish to the kayak quickly and saw he inhaled the bait. Rather than risking a treble hook through the finger trying to lip him I fumbled around trying to get the grip n weigh scale I have out to hold him... in the meantime... *SNAP*.. gone... I'd guess the fish was ~3 lbs. Too bad. I'll be shopping for a new jitterbug today.
A fun night and finally some top water action for me. I hope I can get a few more Wednesday night trips in before it starts getting too cool. |
