So I finally remembered to post this question on CTFT...
A while back I was fishing Keeney cove and spoke to a fisherman in a kayak as we were headed back in. Did fairly well that day catching a couple bass over 2lbs and one that went about 3, along with a very nice pike. We exchanged a few words and turns out he was under the impression that the carp activity in the area was killing the bass fishing. Can some of you seasoned vets shed some light on this? Dusty? Anyone?
I never really considered carp a predatory fish so I was wondering why they had this affect on the fishing. Whats the deal!? _________________ Screw work....I wanna fish

they should install a web cam and broadcast it. It would probably be the best reality show out there. I don't know where those people come from but I am glad they are not my neighbors. There are a lot of scary people there - yikes _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Certain species of carp can infact damage and threaten other species including bass. The ivasive Asian carp in the midwest have gotten a lot of press for many reasons (like knocking people off of jet skis and out of boats) but they are a major threat to fish populations. They eat the food that the fry of other fish need to survive. They are voracious eaters and multiply quickly - thus taking over habitats. They've built electic barriers to try to keep them out of Lake Michigan. On the Mississippi and Illinois rivers they are actually having a lot of catch and kill events just to help control them. Google asian carp problems and you'll find what I'm talking about.; There's actually a lot of cool video out there of the fish juimping all over the place. |
