Took the kayak to work on friday so I could do a little fishing after work and start the weekend out right!!
Fished Quonipaug from 5-8PM alternating between a dropshot and a jig for most of the time. Picked up 5 bass including a couple of 3 lbers and this one that went 4.25! Best part was that I caught it close enough to a beach where there was someone that was nice enough to take a few pics for me!

interesting you fished quonnipaug in a kayak... that place is notorious for a good stiff breeze... wtg!
oh. and besides a scale (see pataconk report), i needed a camera and piece of string. paddling to the other fisherman with the other one hand holding the fish in the water wasn't easy. |

Buy a Hobbie with the pedal-drive Stu,...makes fishing in the wind a "breeze"!! Also,..a little parachute-cord (available in D.i.cks in the kayak section..) tied to a stringer-clip will allow you to paddle without a problem with the fish in-tow!! _________________ "If people concentrated more on the really important things in life there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."

Nice Fish! and SWEET kayak. I saw them on Hank Parker's television show earlier this year. I am definitely considering picking one up for next season. It would be perfect when i am out solo. There is just one thing i dont understand........ How do you steer without a paddle in your hands??? It looks like it just paddles straight. I remember Hank looked like he was just leaning into his turns but I wasn't sure if there was some kind of rudder system I didnt know about. could you fill me in? |

Okay, here's the FAQ's on them!!
There's basically two models for fishermen,...
Mine is the Outback which is the original model. It is 11 ft long and very wide and stable. It is almost impossible to flip it without getting out of the seat unless you're playing in some sizable ocean-surf or something and you let it hit you sideways!
The other model (for fishing) is the Revolution, which is 14 feet long and more narrow. It is still very stable,..just a little less so than the Outback,..
But longer and narrower = faster through the water! That's the tradeoff.
The only real downside to any of them is the cost,...they are a lot more expensive than "normal" kayaks,....(about $1700). People generally, really like them and it is very rare to ever find one for sale, used. Even if/when you do,..they are only discounting them a couple of hundred bucks,...so the price is what it is!
They have a very slick rudder system built in,..which folds up and down with a twist of a lever from where you sit. There is a second lever for steering, conveniently placed right where your hand hits the side when you are sitting & peddling. It only steers and pedals going forward though,..so if you get into somewhere where you have to back up,..you will have to unstrap the regular paddle to do it! After you get used to it,..you can easily avoid that with a little thought and planning about where the wind is and how you approach the fishing spots. A good sized bass will be able to easily spin you around and (from what I'm told,)..a good sized striper can pull you for hundreds of yards!
The other question that I had, was about how that drive system would work when there's weeds around. The answer is that except for thick mats, it shakes off any weeds it touches much better than my trolling motor does! If you really want to go into the thick stuff or go across a flat with 6" of water,..you can fold up the flappers (they are built to tuck right up against the hull..), flip up the rudder and then just paddle like a regular kayak!
Although, I'd still rather be standing up to fish,...they are very comfortable to fish from!! You are essentially reclining in an easy-chair while fishing from them! Add to that the exercise-factor and there is a lot to like! _________________ "If people concentrated more on the really important things in life there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."

Actually, I have one more question...... Can you fit a reasonable amount of tackle on the outback? I know it has some storage based on what the website says, but how much room is there? Plenty? Not Enough? |
