Took the wife to be out to a local pond where we've caught some LG's before but I really went there to practice the frog in the pads. First cast into the muck there was an explosion, full out of water bass!!! My first fish on a frog Of course this on the first cast has to be good news for the rest of the night... not so much. I caught nothing on top for the rest of the night while she was brought in 4 on finesse worms. Oh well. I was still pretty happy with my frog fish (~1.25lbs) I had fished the same style of worms a couple days before and got nothin... I guess that's the way it goes. Any body have any suggestions for frogs? Its pretty exciting and I'd like to do more. I tried a $1.25 popper I got from the BassPro bargain bin and several rock bass and a largemouth at night with it out on Crystal in Ellington with shortypowers. Other than that my top water experience is very limited I'd be happy to hear some suggestions. Does time of day matter much? I know there are no rules in fishing but just curious. _________________ 6.5' Penn Long Beach with a Penn 330Gti for deep sea

I know there will be alot of guys who won't agree with me but I have caught some of my best fish on topwater baits most will say they are for night time or overcast but its my experience that even in bright sunlight they can be used. cmorjoe |

I love top water. Its my favorite way to fish. The bite is definently best in the VERY early morning and then on again in the late afternoon all the way into dark and after. You can get hits during the day but the bite normally slows down. Sunny days are tough but if the fish are agressive it will work. I have noticed shallow lakes in the summer where the water is very warm can be very productive. If you are somewhere where there is a lot of boat traffic topwater is not your best choice most of the time.
My favorite baits:
Zara Spooks
Spro Forgs(over lillypads)
Buzz Baits(Through spotty lillypads)
Good luck...I hope this helps. |

PS...I Agree with cmorjoe that a lot of people dont beleave in topwater but my 3rd and 4th biggest bass have come from a topwater bait (both around 4lbs). Also the biggest bass I have ever had on was on a buzzbait...I lost it but I got a couple very good looks at it. It happens. Dont get discouraged if you loose or miss a lot of fish on topwater it can take awhile to figure everything out. And fish just seems to miss your bait. |

I love fishing poppers, buzz baits and frogs. Especially this time of year. Man I need to do some fresh water fishing. I have been doing mostly striper fishing as this year seems to be epic for stripers. _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Top water is a lot of fun but I can never get good hooks sets. Lost a monster down at Moodus on a 3 inch Rebel Pop-R this thing was well into the 8 pound range. I catch a lot of bigger bass on a Black Hula Popper and the smaller bass and rock bass on the Rebel. I also had a big brown near the 18 inch mark come up and smack the Rebel at West Hill this summer at first light... |

I like to throw an aurora gold luckycraft sammy 100, and have had really good luck with it. Because it is a longer bait than most (except for the spook), it usually catches bigger bass, the runts usually leave it alone. If I'm fun fishing and looking for #'s of bass, I'll throw a super pop R, or a smally sammy. _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |
