| I bought a 14ft Quest canoe from Dick's at the beginning of April. I want to put a trolling motor on it. Does anyone have any suggestions on the size I should get? It saids its rated for 2.5 hp but this is my first canoe and I'm just learning I don't want to go over board. |

i have a 34 lb thrust transom mount motorguide that pushed my 15" coleman just fine i also have an older 45 lb 12/24 bow mount motor guide id be willing to part with cheap!!!  pm me if your interested |

june-bug, any 40 lb thrust trolling motor will push that canoe no problem. Just remember if you do put a trolling motor on you will have to register the canoe with the DMV now that it is considered "motorized". No big deal just $15.00 dollars a year for the regs and the stickers that you put on the bow end.

to add to jim's post, you will also need you safe boating certificate which you can take at cabelas. It is an 8 hour course that you can do in one day or take a class that is split in to two hour increments.

I would recommend between a 40 - 50 pound thrust - it will move your boat without any troubles even in adverse wind conditions. I have a 44lb thrust minkota on my 14' row boat and it moves it without any problems.

according to the CT boater guide, you need a cert to operate any boat with a motor/engine and that includes trolling motors - hey the state needs their money.

| you will need the certificate for any motorized boat. It use to be 10hp and above but they changed it a few years back. |

They changed it quite a few years back, about 20 years or so. I know because before I really got into bass fishing, I received a ticket at Mansfield Hollow for just this infraction, an electric trolling motor on a canoe that was un registered.
That was the end of the canoe fishing for me. I figured if I was going to pay money to register some kind of craft, I got myself a starter boat, a 12 aluminum rowboat, and off I went.
3 boats later and I still have no idea what I'm doing!
