First time taking my hobie kayak out this year. Went up to Winchester Lake where I had caught my PB 6lb LMB last year hoping to get another.
Date/Time: Saturday 4-26-08 / 7:30am - 2:00pm
Weather: Overcast early and windy to partly cloudy mid afternoon
Water temp: don't have a water thermometer (anyone know a good cheap one?)
Caught 5 LMB and 2 Calico
Unfortunately only 1 of the 7 was a keeper and not that much at that:
ALL 7 caught on:  except my lure was of the older color version of the rapala perch
But it was a fun day and a good start to the season. I'm still a beginner looking to improve my techniques and know-how so I can pull in more fish than I did last year as a rookie.
Anybody have any suggestions for taking better pictures from my kayak? I don't have much room to move around out there and it's just me, myself, and I. I'd like to take the best pics to gage size and I'm not sure the "hold in front of the camera' is the best technique. Luckily last year another boater was close by to take some pics of my personal best, but what if no one's there next time - any suggestions?

| If you are able to get your rod and reel next to the fish in the picture it makes it easier to gage how big it actually is. Nice report. |

Thanks man. That's a good idea, I'll make sure to at least get my reel next to the fish for some perspective.
Most of the fish were caught in the shallows if anyone is interested. The 'keeper' was caught in the back cove east side next to a pair of fallen trees. The wind made it difficult to get a good feel with senko's on the bottom in the stumps. It wasn't too windy to bring it in, but it was exactly as PAPPY described it in his highland tourney report from Saturday - Consistent moderate wind generally out of the E, SE - the back cove was somewhat protected.

N8Cas,
I fished that lake many many years ago. I remember the stumps at the far end, kinda looked like a grave yard full of head stones.
I was thinking of heading there again soon with the jon boat..
From what I remember the Skeeter might be to big.

The lake can support your Skeeter just fine, you just have to be careful around the stumps, just as you would if you were in the jonboat.
I live right next store in Rocky Hill, if you ever want some company up to Winchester in the jon or the Skeeter, let me know.

Nice job there Nate!
Just got my Outback,..so I'll be figuring out the camera/picture-taking thing shortly! You can get a cheap thermometer in any pool supply place that comes with a cord attached to it! Out on the water you could also use a longer cord and find out what the temp is 4-6 feet down instead of just at the surface! That would be pretty useful,..especially this time of year!

Thanks Mark....how long until we have a kayak fishing tourney?!?! Last weekend i hesitated to get out on the water b/c of the weather. It really wasn't that bad, so I'l make sure to stick it out next time the weathermen call for showers. I did take a ride out to the upper housatonic with my girlfriend and had a good afternoon. Went over the covered bridge in Cornwall and ate at the Wandering Mouse. I even pulled a smallie out of the housatonic near the covered bridge in a pool right before the ripples under the bridge.

If you have the means,..a john boat is a better platform to fish from! IMO,..anything that you can stand up on for bass fishing is going to be better than something where you have to sit close to water level.

my back hurts just looking at that kyak. They are certainly cool but I don't think I could be in one for more than a half hour which sucks cause they look like a lot of fun.
