Hit mash with slimecoat today for some fun in the sun.
water temps where 61-65 with shifting and variable winds, mostly sunny.
Landed 10 plus keepers and some doinks and lost a few nice largies at the boat.Nice mix of smallies and largies today.Smallies where ON BEDS in 5-8 feet and largies where up in less than 4 feet. We used jigs, slider worms(black) spooks, and tubes. Saw lost of SPPOKY cruisers and the largies where all RELATED TO WOOD OR DOCKS.Fished the east shore from the first big humps all way down into the northern most cove.It was a nice day for sure and mash is a nice quiet place to fish.

Good day at Mash Johnny.

I told Gary I went there day before and only a few small dinks.

The good news was I was the only cathing fish.

You guys did better than I did.

Ron

Johnny and I had a blast, it was nice just to get out and fun fish with a friend. We both hit the tourney trails hard, so this was a welcome change, that we don't get to do that often.

Like Johnny said smallies on beds, about 50% were locked on and the rest wouldn't take a bait and spooked off the bed. Largemouths were relating to wood or brush, and most were cruising and very spooky. Other baits that Johnny forgot about were the lost sammy (which we won't talk about), chigger craw, hair jig, drop shot, and the senko that took our biggest bass, a 3.5 largemouth from a brush pile. All fish were caught shallow, as we could not get bit working deeper points.

I would like to have seen the monster smallmouth that broke off, and stole my zara spook on a rocky point with a lone stick up. She came out of the water and blasted my bait. I set the hook and she broke off right away, I think a bad knot? Boy she was pissed, she jumped a few times trying to shake it loose, but the spook never came to the surface, so she'll be smoking my cigar for a while.

Our best 5, had this been a tournament, went over 12 lbs. There were a few other boats on the lake, but we never saw them catch anything. They were all fishing deep, and probably struggling.

We think the sun helped us, the fish came up on the beds to warm up when the sun was high, and as the sun went down the bite died, we believe most fish pulled off the beds and went deep again.

Thanks Johnny, we'll have to do this again sometime soon, I had a great time.

I love fishing there (family has been going there for years), but the best boat I can come up with is a canoe.... which takes a little longer to get around the lake...

If you ever want company up there let me know!

Wishin, I haven't fished there in about 8 years before Saturday. I'm gonna have to make it a habbit of going there early to hit the smallies again.

Great info on the lake guys. This I'm sure will come in handy when I fish my 1st turney at this lake in two weeks. I'm really looking forward to pre fishing it this week end but the weather looks creepy. Again thanks for the great info and good luck fishing this year.

Nice job at the Mash guys. I love fishing there but hate the fact that you have to park your vehicle/trailer halfway down the street.

Yeah the parking sucks, and with all the land near the launch, there is no reason they couldn't expand the parking area to hold 20 boat tournaments. They actually have signs posted at the launch parking area, that says no parking of boat trailers in that lot. I'm not sure why that is, probably all the nature lovers / hikers must have made a big stink. Maybe somebody on the site has some true insight to why this is.

True, if they did expand the lot that would make Mashapaug one of the better places to fish IMO. Because of the 10mph speed limit you never have to worry about the jet-skiers or the water-skiers. It just needs a bigger parking lot!

I think the lake property owners had something to do with it. Just so it would limit the amount of anglers on the lake at any one time, by making it difficult for us. I know one of the big CEO's of Pratt and Whittney owns the big monster spread of a house at the northern most tip of the lake.

This is my opinion....

They let the hikers and what not park up there because it is a little tight to maneuver a boat and trailer in the summer when its packed. Yes I know its not for someone who knows what they're doing but.... I think especially for the guys by themselves, they don't want to leave their boat unattended while they park their truck out of sight it should be allowed.
