So i was lucky enough to fish the "secret pond/lake" for about an hour last night. Things were going slow (only caught 25 bass in an about 75 mins) Yes, that's honestly a slow night up there. Brief background...it's a private pond/lake, spring fed from the bottom, crystal clear and 70ft deep in the middle. I'll give one hint only...from the boat house , you can see all the way to Torrington which is about 15 miles or more away. So
I weeded through about 10 fish in the 3-5lb range and me and my buddy decided to row the canoe to one last spot near the boat house b/c it was getting dark. I see this down tree hanging from the bank and protruding about 20 ft into the lake. The water below it was probably about 2-7ft deep as there's a slight ledge there. So i make what was honestly the best cast i've ever made into the limbs w/ a rapala husky jerkbait. One twitch and my rod gets bent over. This beast just absolutely unloaded on it. I battle him for a minute or two (thank god for shimano calcuttas w/ 20lb braid), then finally wench him back to the boat. That's when we saw just how big it was. I was prepared for him though b/c the last time I went up there and caught my PB, i had a crappy scale and a crappy camera. This time I had 2 scales in my bag, 1 was a boga, another a berkley that I use as a backup as well as 2 cameras. By the time I boated the beast it was dark out so the shots from my camera sucked. The ones my buddy got were pretty good. The official tally..... Berkely scale read 9lbs 3oz. while the boga came in w/ 8lbs 14oz. While i'd like to go w/ the higher number obviously, the boga is much more accurate imo. Before anyone starts w/ the naysaying, keep in mind how big a guy I am. (6'2, 250lbs) My hands are big enough to palm a basketball and if you notice, I couldn't fit em around the tail. My buddy had the idea to hold the fish while I took a pic of him w/ it b/c he's a lot thinner than I am. I think those pics are a bit more accurate yet still don't do the fish justice. After snapping some pics, it was back in the water for the fish to fight another day. I can honestly say this is the ONLY fish that made my hands shake from the adrenalin rush. If any of you guys hunt , it was like that feeling of getting a nice deer in your sites and your heart just races like a lab rat on viagra. I think I may have convinced my buddy to make this a weekly thing so hopefully I'll have reports this year of an even bigger fish. I'm convinced it could very well hold a state record for both bass and pickeral. Unfortunately it's private, not on any maps or GPS and VERY POSTED. Put it this way...if anyone drove up there, they'd be arrested for trespassing before they got a line in the water. I'm extremely lucky to have a friend who's parents live up there so every now and again i'll get to fish there. Well hope you enjoy the pics. I'm sure there's gonna be at least one or two ppl who doubt it and that's fine.
Me with the fish
2 shots of my buddy holding the same fish.

Unfortunately I didn't have a tape measure with me which really sucks. If I had to guess I'd say it went a good 25-27" in length but it was very tall. From the bottom of the belly to the dorsal fin had to be a good 7-8" or so. . I noticed a lot of the bass I pull outta there are very long. This was definately the fattest one I've pulled out of there but then again I've never had the chance to fish there in the early spring. I'm sure there's bigger fish in there too which is the crazy part. I've never fished anywhere like it in my life. The best part is none of these fish have ever been caught before so who knows whats in there _________________ Work is for guys that don't know how to fish. |

My buddy for the first time ever, told me I could keep the fish to have it mounted. I told him I just couldn't do it. A fish like that comes along once in a very long while. It just wouldn't be right to kill it. I'm gonna see if btwn all the pics we took, if someone could make a good fiberglass repro of it. I'm also thinking about making a some sort of frame w/ the lure I caught it on and a bunch of pics of it for my hunting/fishing cabin in new york. _________________ Work is for guys that don't know how to fish. |

i forgot to post up the lure I used to catch it. I found this pic on google. The lure on top is the exact same one i caught it on.
I thought it was kinda odd that shad colored lures weren't really producing despite the water being clear as day. Seemed like they really like the tiger/chartreuse combo _________________ Work is for guys that don't know how to fish. |

It probably was attracted to the orange belly, thought it was a wounded perch, and exploded on it. _________________ Life's Short - Fish Hard - Take a Kid Fishing |

I am glad you released the fish.

Wowee zowie,..that thing's a beast! Great job and congrats!!
ps: C&R is the only way to go with a fish like that! She's fat with eggs and you definitely don't want to take that gene-pool out of circulation! _________________ "If people concentrated more on the really important things in life there'd be a shortage of fishing poles."

hahaha nope definately not in burlington but i LMAO @ your Ron Jeremy avatar
I bet some of you have driven past this pond/lake and not even known it was there. I wish I could just tell everyone where it is but out of fear that someone would actually show up there and try to fish, I just can't. Last thing I want is to blow my chances of fishing there again. If the person who owned this wanted, they could easily charge people to fish there for the day. Hell I would pay $200/day to fish there and I'm primarily a saltwater guy. What I wouldn't give to get out there w/ a nice bass boat and some solid fishfinding equip. We're always fishing blind which kinda sucks. At the same time, it's not uncommon to fish there for a few hours, catch more than 50 fish and have the average size be in the 3-5lb range. _________________ Work is for guys that don't know how to fish. |
