Looking for some usage advice (when and why) to use surface lures like poppers running any lure on the surface ??

It has been my experience that surface baits work best when fish are feeding actively, that is to say that strikes occur almost immediately on other types of baits, even as soon as they hit the water. This usually means that the fish are active and near the top of the water in which case they will usually hammer topwater lures or shallow running lures. Hope that helps.

I have had a lot of luck with topwaters like poppers or Rapala Skitter Walks both early in the morning or on an overcast day once the temperature rises.

They work when the they are not aggressively feeding as well. You can pause the bait as long as you want and keep the bait in the basses strike zone longer. I use Rapala and strike king poppers. I only use colors that look like minnows/shinners/shad - no exotic colors. Poppers can make the difference between catching and not catching on a slow day. I love catching fish on top.

When it comes to Saltwater it depends were you are fishing and what species you are attacking:

Early year topwater I prefer Zaraspooks or Mirro-lures working from shore to boat.
Broken back Redfins slow on top when fishing from shore.Slow twiches/crank
I also have some secret weapons and those will never be seen or heard of outside of the inner circle.

Thanks guys... and I didn't even think of salt water...

I just know over the years I've accumulated a couple poppers but haven't really used them or caught anything with them.
