Spent the afternoon at a local lake...
Got there about 1:00pm not much activity especially after throwing everything in my tackle box. I had some good ideas but nothing turned up. The water was high and the first 6ft from shore was pretty clear. (I have no boat so I shore fish.)

There was a lot of reeds that I figured fish would be hiding in considering there should be warmer water. I then switched to a popper thinking what the heck, the lake is pretty smooth...nothing. I then switched to a jointed rapala which looked like a fish should have destroyed it considering my presentation but to no avail no bites. I through some other random things and still nothing so I through some worms the old fashion way and got a couple sunnies and they all had a purplish tint to them like a haddock that I had never seen before. Anyway, I made some supper on the grill and returned to fishing about dusk.

All of a sudden fish are smashing the top of the water about 40-50 feet from shore. This has multiple times before at this spot. I could see some of them jumping clear of the water and they weren't sunnies... definitely bass size fish. I couldn't quite cast too them and I caught nothing. I figured they must be hitting the surface bugs but I have nothing but trout flies and they don't work without my fly rod. Also I couldn't cast to where they were. So I figured I'll use one of my bigger flies that worked real well in Yellowstone and made it on its own leader with a bobber for casting weight . I got one hit but no fish.

Any ideas of what I can fish with to get in on this crazy fishing?

could be carp sun bathing. They do that a lot and could easily be mistaken for bass.. You can hit them on the head and they still won't bite. They do make carp baits you could try or even pizza doe.

I didn't see the part about dusk. They still will surface at night and splash around. They are weird fish. I could be totally wrong and they were bass - just throwing out ideas.

Wishin,

I had that same event happen to me on a lake in Union CT. It was SMB chacing the bait fish.

It was awesome to watch a bait ball move all over on the fish finder and breaking water.

That's my best guess.
