Years ago, talking back in the 70's / 80's used to troll around Charles Island and catch some nice Striped Bass. Got them up to 50 pounds there. Blues and Porgies out there too. Ahhh the barber poles. Brings back old memories when my dad had a big boat and we used to go out there. He's gone now and my lake boat is 14 feet but I think it's big enough for a semi calm day. I may have to get back out to Charles next year. |

My gramps has a 14 deep V aluminium row boat.25 horse.We only get out there in calm days as well.He's brave being in the Navy when he was younger but,won't leave the river if it's too rough.I hope it's calm enough tomorrow morning!

You can have a ton of fun with a 14' boat in the sound. I ran a 14' w/ a 20hp the last couple of years in the sound all of the time out of Niantic, Avery Point, Barn Island and other places. If the wind was under 10, I'd easily cross over to the north side of Fisher's Island. You just have to stay out of the rips, know the tides and be aware of the forecasts. Fish the near shore reefs and rock piles. It's even easier West of the CT River as you tend to get calmer water. Like I said, wind speed and direction dictated where I would fish, but the opportunities were all over the place.
