Hi, all
Does anyone know what is going on at Westhill pond. How thick is the ice? How has the trout fishing been there? Could someone please tell me what bait they are hitting on, and at what depths. any information would be greatly apreciated. I am only 14 and am just looking for some information becasue I know very little about ice fishing, and my father knows even less. but I am really into it and would once again appreciate any tips, or suggestions. I was told there is public parking at one end of the lake is this true? Also where could i buy live bait around there?
Thanks, Cody |

Hi Cody!
Plenty of ice at WEST HILL, over 6 inches.
"ALL TROUT ARE ROAMERS " which means they can be 2 inches under the ice, on the bottom, or in-between.
You'll have to set traps or jig at different depths all during the day to find them.
As for bait? Small shiners, spikes, mealworms, waxies, mousies, butter worms, trout worms, nightcrawlers, etc., etc.
3 good places to get bait.
In order
#1 Fall Mountain Outfitters in Torrington on Rt.202
#2 Fisherman's Cove in Winsted on Rt.8 North
#3 Up Country in New Hartford on Rt.44
Be Safe, Have Fun

Hi Cody!
Forgot to mention that there's plenty of parking at the north end of WEST HILL which is the only public access to the pond.
Again, Have all your Safety Gear!
Ice Picks
Whistle
Rope
Ice Creepers
Extra clothing in case you go thru the ice.
Some snacks and something warm to drink is nice!

Hi, Sea Dog
Thanks again for the parking information. I know when your outdoors (hunting, Fishing etc) you should always prepare for the worse even if you think you will be safe. as for snacks we will probably have a Coleman grill going with burgers
even with yesterday, and today, the ice will still be safe right?

Hi JW!
Your post as of today Sat. 1/16/10 said Monday morning on West Hill
Was that a typo
I was out on WH today, from 1 to 4 PM, and caught only a fat 20 inch Pikerel on a dead stick with live shiner.
Still was a nice day and made some new friends

Fished West Hill 1/17 with son from 9 am til 3 pm South End. Met a few aquaintances out there with over 20 tip-ups out only 2 pickeral right off the rip then FLAGS DOWN ALL DAY I didn't get one darn flag all day Though just before we left my son lost one jigging. I figured with the front coming in the fish would be hitting. DEP was out there on 2 quads doing there job they said with our report and theirs only 4 pickeral on the whole day!!! They said they were at Waramaug Saturday _________________ Its a whole lot more than just being "LUCKY" |

Jiggy with it,
I was on Westhill Pond on Sunday as well. We had a very slow day .
only 2 flags up. both were smaller pickerel. we met some guys my dad knew through his friend and they only caught a pickerel, and a little rock bass. wasn't the best day of fishing but at least the weather wasn't brutally cold and windy like it was last weekend. it says below your picture you live in Farmington, I live in Farmington too. |
