With the break in the weather I felt the need to hit the streams for some trout since most areas have been restocked over the past week or two. I took my daughter to Old Mine Park in Trumbull last night to fish a stretch of the Pequonnock River from 7 until they closed. She got 3 trout on powerbait so the trip was worthwhile. I was tossing a trout magnet and to my surprise caught 6 pickerel throughout the night. Sizes ranged from 6 to 15 inches. I even got one in some fast moving water below a small dam....very surprised by that. No trout for me though. How the heck did all these pickerel get in this small stretch of water?
This morning I headed over to Beardsley Park to fish for an hour or so before work. I wanted to try my luck at the Pequonnock again. I wound up landing 2 trout on a pink trout magnet and 2 more on a Berkley power nymph, including a very healthy brookie that fought like heck. The sun was breaking and most fish were in the shadows today in moderately flowing water.
It's been at least 20 years since I fished that river and it was nice to hit it again and do pretty good both days with minimal effort. |
