Kayak fishing is a blast, glad i got into it.

I came home yesterday afternoon fom NH for the weekend and decided since I went all the way there and fished Lake Squam and didnt catch anything I migt as well try fishing in my backyard which is a 186 acre lake that a lot of the locals go to.

I dont like going there because the locals dont treat it rigt and trash it, the usual.

But i figured i would give it a shot, glad i did. While trolling a orange yama grub in about 2 or 3 ft of wateri saw my rod bent over and i hooked up with nice smallmouth that was in the range of 3 lbs. At first i thougt it was a largemouth, didnt think smallmout were in there but those red eyes gave it away. Unfortunately did take a picture, didnt have my phone for fear of dumping in the water, but getting more comfortable with kayak now, next time.

Phil, you troll a lot, how do you keep your lures underwater not on top, do you weight them?

No, I don't weigh down either my line or my crankbaits. As far as I can tell, Rapalas run near their designed depth. If yours are running too shallow for your tastes, they're either designed to run that way, or you're trolling them too fast or with too little line. Try varying everything until you get what you want. I try to troll at 1-1/2 miles per hour, which is actually pretty hard to do. It's a lot slower than you probably think.

You read it right, unfortunately i didn't put much effort into my fishing trip there and did more paddling in my yak than anything. Couldnt go to far out of the cove boats were going way to fast for my comfort and were causing huge wakes.(memorial day weekend) place was packed

I found out that most decent places to put a boat or kayak into the water was private, so i drove around till I found a cove, i didn't spend much time there, maybe 3 hrs. Think i only tried a spinnerbait and some senkos, like i said not a lot of effort Sad beautoful lake toug, reminds me of quabbin in MA.
